The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

Customcolor, you are the man, I just didn't want to spend another $13 and then it would be perm stuck there. I thought that the silicone would hold it and if i wanted to remove it. I could use a pry bar and slowly remove it.

then you will have to ruff up the plastic a little with a scratch pad or sand paper cuz plastics are just to smooth (less porous) for silicone to stick to. with the amount of force that the foam wants lift up it has to be almost permanent.

heres my 2 projects i did.

bad picture on the 2nd one but its a 10g AIO. the first one is a 47g column tank, used eggcrate to make the backing, ziptied everything together then pond foam then cut the eggcrate away from the edges then used pondfoam around the edges to adhere it to the tank and make it blend more into the sides. got the 10g cycling now and the 47 is waiting on salt :)

although it could just be the dry rock in the 10g but it is coming up very foamy alot. i'm thinking it could be cause of the epoxy i used. i tried the loctite 2 part on it from walmart. it had a cure time of an hour. and with as little area i had to do i didn't want to buy a big thing of epoxy. so i'm wondering if it could be having an adverse affect... on the 47 i'm not using epoxy at all

I think you should at least wait 24 if not 48 hours for a full cure. Most say hours cure means that 95% strength and pretty much cured for dry use. But I would at least wait 48 hours to full 100% cure, no leeching

ok, so heres what I have so far....first of all, this project needs A LOT of foam! we used three cans in no time. The wife is the creative one so she does the work while I take pictures!

We used customcolors idea of rock crystals to avoid the "large intestine look"

Still have to wash them off tomorrow when it warms up but after the salt its looking good already!

now we just need more foam and need to finish the eggcrate cutting. this is for a 8ft 300g tank

very nice rock walls. i want to do one in my 75g tank thats been up for 2 years now. any suggestions on how to go about removing all the coral. about 15 peaces and 7 fish.and live rock about 150 lbs. and i also have crushed rock in bottom of tank and want to go with white sand, can i get away from having the tank go thru a cycle if i do all these changes to it.can i just put non live white sand and plus the wall will also be rock that is not live also. i do have a 30 gal fuge. would this be able to handle the change. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2 questions: I just bought the beckett FOAM pond from HD and nothing would come out. I think it actually harden in the can because it was on the shelf for so long.

Is this possible?

Also can the zip ties be taken off after the foam hardens?

i'm not sure on the epoxy, the loctite epoxy i used was in a syringe type, that had both parts in and you squirted it out. i dont think it was good for my tank. i'm not risking it and tore the whole wall out.

I think you need WAY more rock. Your wall is going to be exteemely bouyant with that rock to foam ratio. Not to mention that, at least IMHO, the more rock, the better it looks, and the easier to attach frags.

you dont "HAVE TO" put rock on it at all...its personal taste...as long as you use enough silicone to keep it on the back wall you will be good...my last one i used no rock at all and its almost 30" down in the tank!

True. But if you use enough rock, you don't need any silicone and it will stay in place. Also, true that it is a matter of personal taste, but I think it looks better with more rocks and then only enough foam to fill in the gaps between them.

yeah but you need a lot of rock to stop it from floating...and doing a back wall on a big tank it can cost a bunch...smaller tanks yep go for more rock to foam . but like we both agree on...its just personal taste and what you can afford...

Hey all,

Thanks for all the contributions. This is by far my favorite thread. I've been following it since the beginning. But have a question.....

I've searched the thread and can't find what I'm looking for.

What is the material or mix for creating rock that I can sculpt like clay. I don't mind firing it in kiln or soaking it for a month or whatever it takes, but I want to sit at my kitchen table and play.

Anyone have this recipe or a link?

Thanks,
