one last question. when using a wave maker, the pump comes on and can spin the opposite (wrong) way, in reverse we'll say. the props push away from the motor housing and hit the Stopper. when it hits the stopper, does the prop automatically just stop and spin the other (right) way? when it hits the stopper, is it loud enough to "bug" you?

wondering if in the long run, maybe this mod should not be used on a wave maker. any thoughts?

I was thinking about the wavetimer issue too, the DIY $6 timer that is in this section seems like it would be a reasonable candidate for waves (30 sec intervals) but anything shorter would probably severely impair the propeller's life.

What do those of you with the stop in place think?

You've got to be kidding. Wow, do you have a Home Depot or Lowes? Both of those have them here. Some people call them a pvc knock-out.

Both actually. The manager of the plumbing dept. at HD said that "although this is a very common item, i can't stock unless there is a distinct market for it" ...guess no on within a 60mi. radius ever has a need for a knock out plug / test cap

Here's my first attempt at the maxi jet mod.

Works great so far. Seems to have about the same output as my Seio 1100.

Yes, that is ABS I used. The white PVC stood out way too much.

Great job Kevin. And if you think one propeller is nice, you should see what it can produce with the two prop design that I had.

Well, I too was unsuccessful locating PVC test caps at Lowes in South Florida. If anyone has a version of this mod that does not require these hard to find parts please post it with pictures. I'm not sure about trying to machine a kludge with a dremel tool but if that is what it takes, I suppose that is what I'll do. Any help out there?

I did all of my cuts with a table saw. It took no time at all. Well, almost :D .

Most of the big name home centers (HD, Lowes) in SW Florida and probably around the country, don't have test caps in stock because "there's not enough demand for them".

Instead, try a local Ace hardware or plumbing supply shop.

Just my 2Ã"šÃ‚¢

using grey SCH40 PVC pipe

using grey SCH40 PVC pipe

Here's one I made for reifen using a grey SCH40 PVC pipe from Home Depot.

As you can see it's quite a bit lighter than the MJ body but at least it's not glaringly white anymore :)

The slot and the groove cutting doesn't really take all that long anymore (maybe 10 minutes for one?). The part that takes the most time now is waiting for glue to dry and cure. That and the measuring beforehand.

I'd say besides the waiting for the glue to dry anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes for one.

Another fine job.

Schedule 40 PVC is a little on the light side, and ABS is a little on the dark side.

Maybe once the coraline grows on it, I won't notice the difference. :)

I got mine mounted yesterday. The output is pretty good. Much better than a standard Maxijet of course. I would guess that it is roughly half of my Tunze 6080. Assuming that Tunze's specs are accurate and my above guess is somewhat close, it means that the output of my DIY is probably around 1100-1200 gph.

I may try to put this on a 1200 and see if it makes a difference.

I don't know if you will get all that much better flow with a MJ1200.

By and large the MJ900 is the more efficient pump than the MJ1200 delivering about 27.06 gph per watt whereas the MJ1200 can only put out 14.75 gph per watt.

What the MJ1200 does is it probably has more torque and might work really nicely if modded with a larger 1.75" propeller instead of the 1.25" ones.

Incidentally I saw that the MJ1200 is on sale a MarineDepot for $16.11 (that's cheaper than the MJ900 even)
