I mean it runs beatifully for a few minutes and then the propeller begins sliding back and forth on the shaft and clicking as if in permanent startup phase... and yes, I do have a stop to keep it from spiing backward.

I'll get a pic

It's 1.5 abs coupling to 1.5 abs pipe to 1.5 test cap about 2" long. There isn't a ton of clearance with the 1.75 dumas but it isn't hitting the sides.

It's really ugly because all I had was a jigsaw and rotary tool to make it ;)

So... The propeller is spinning the whole time while the whole thing slides back and forth? OR does it stop spinning completely and just slides back and forth?

My first thought is your housing doesn't allow enough slots behind the propeller and possibly one too many slots infront of the prop. Try this .... Extend the rigid tube and propeller out a bit further until the propeller is at the last inlet slot and see if that improves on things. That would be easier than re-doing your housing.

D.

BTW- last night i figured out what was wrong with my mod. Apparently the nitro prop was not as 'snug' on the rigid tubing as I thought, and it was sliding down the tube towards the impeller, and then just slowly spun around the tube. I glued it in place this time and put it back in, and now it seems to be doing great!

fish ears?

fish ears?

i made one of these and its quiet; i cant hear it when its running. but i was wondering if fish can hear or get disstressed from the noise of the pump? i put my head againist the glass and it sounds like a boat motor running. i ran the maxi after it and it sounds nothing like the mod. just wondering if the fish can hear or feel the pump running. i did listen to the hang on filter on my 10gal icu tank and it sounds a little less than the mod. so fish are exposed to some noise. i was wondering how much can they handle? my sister is a marine bio major at college so i will ask her the next time i talk to her, i was hopeing maybe one of you know???

I was thinking the SAME EXACT thing. When i first put my mod in the tank it seemed to make a lot of noise. I was wondering if that can affect the fish, short term or long term? I know it would bother the h*** out of me if my house gave off a constant buzzing noise....

I dont really notice the noise anymore. I'm not sure if that's because it kind of centered itself or I just got used to it...

Hi dhnguyen, and Thank You for the mod for my MJ900.
The turbulence with the NITRO prop is perfect, Ive not done the 'hold your ear next to the glass' to listen for the propreller wash......didnt even think of it.
The clowns are hanging out pretty much in their end of the tank as usual and the goby is pretty much secluded, I suppose with time they'll get used to the current flow which is just awesome across our 29gal (17 gal of water) reef tank. All kinds of stuff was churning up and out and then being pulled out by the overflow.
The rocks are getting a good 'hosing'
The sps xorals will be in Heaven!

Thanks again. GREAT JOB in craftsmanship! And time in shipping was alot quicker than I anticipated.

So I've been looking into Octura propellers a lot and it seems they might be even better than the Nitro and Dumas propellers in terms of size and pitch.

I know the rc boat folks rave about these guys and I'm thinking I should try them out. Only thing is it's very difficult to buy an Octura propeller unless you contact the manufacturer directly. Sheesh they don't even have an email address.

Gonna try to order some and see how well they perform.
If anyone is interested on trying them out as well here is the address and phone number for Octura below:

Octura Models Inc

Here's a link to their propeller catalog:

Octura props can be purchased online HERE.
(And much easier to see what you are getting with pictures too!)
:p

sorry about that. i wrote something completely wrong...then tried to delete, which I couldn't do for some reason. So I edited it to a blank message...

But looking closer, they don't list any of the props with the steeper pitch. :(

Maybe you can email them and see if you can get some that aren't listed on their site.

No worries. I already called Octura directly and spoke to a very nice lady who is now sending out a full propeller catalog of all of their plastic propellers and an order form.

Otherwise, I found this other site just now...

Not sure if they do business online, or if they will ship, but their prices are LOW! :eek2:
They are in Michigan, so if anybody is near them, you can probably get a great deal.
Some of their props cost CENTS, not dollars. ;)

(I'm looking into the Octura 2035 and/or 2045, looks promising.)

Hey danh, How did you attatch your MJ600 mod to the tank?
The best I could do is set it on a rock and back it up to the tank wall letting the thrust of the prop hold it in place.
Thinking about plastic wire tieing it down, it has moved some, But, NOT to the bottom! :(

Whats the proven means? magnetic clamp, like TUNZE?
dont have one.
