Also, I tried the MJ1200 turning the 1.75" Dumas in my 55 for kicks...Wow!
The flow went 4' across the tank, bounced off the side wall, and lifted a softball sized pipe organ coral off the sand and was in the process of washing it back towards the Maxi-Stream when I killed the trial. Clearly WAY too much flow for a 55 gallon tank (which we already knew, but mad scientists can't resist these things).

That depends on what you want to keep in your tank. 2 MJ900's with double nitro will be quite a bit of flow in a 55g. Then again if you're only keeping SPS, they'll love it.
I have a 55g mixed tank and am running 2 MJ400's with single Dumas propeller. Plenty of flow with just those.

Nope, I try them all without the housing first to see if they can turn the prop(s) without any back pressure. My MJ900 simply wouldn't turn the 1.75" Dumas. I'm sure there is variation among MJ900's and some will and some won't. It must be right on the edge of what your's is capable of if mine won't.
The MJ1200 has about a 5% chance of turning a dual 1.75" Dumas. It took about 20 false starts (stall, spin off in wrong direction) before it started up and kept spinning. The flow was pretty insane though.

the mj 900 impeller has the same design as the 1200 right? (i.e. modding works the same)

My MJ900 won't turn the 1.75 Dumas prop either. The same housing, prop & shaft work great on the MJ1200. Great flow & pretty quiet with the 1200 while 900 just rattles back & forth. Apparently not all 900s are equal....

on the mod of my seio620 i can turn the dumas 1.75 but it doesnt start well. i have to pull the unit 1/2 out of the water. that might be just the fact that it's a feature of the seio design or the prop. when it does turn, it put's out some nice flow.
if you can't get the dumas to turn, try pulling the mj out of the water slightly. it might start and then keep going once back underwater. if that is the case, the prop probably is too much for the powerhead.

Hey, I think that the ultimate goal would be something that would outdo at least a TUNZE 6100 @ 3100gph...or maybe even a 6200 @ 5000gph+.
Maybe... But at some point too much flow is just... Well... Too much.
Using a more powerful powerhead than Maxijet and I have no doubt we can get the flow rate up there easily.

What about JD power and other ratings houses slamming VW and knocking them from the top of the list to near the bottom for decades of coverups regarding "German Engineering" It turns out that most of the problems with the VWs and Audius were well know, but the Engineers refused to fix them and instead either covered them up or blamed them on "dumb americans who don't know how to use a product" .
All those conumer reports BEST MAINTENANCE awards were based upon cooked figures. In reality the VWs had more routine maintenance problems than almost any car on the road. Door handles, starters, exhasust components, head gaskets, leaking door seals, junky CV joints, premature piston ring failure, sticking throttles and posessed transmisions... the list is endless.
The funny part is that my dad was a VOLKSWAGON zealot. He used to say "they run forever" We had Jettas, Gulfs, Rabbits, Gas, Diesel... whatever. My brother and I used to say "yeah for every hour on the road, you spent an hour under the car". The worst part was making your date climb in through the back seat because both front door handles were broken (dad used to buy them in bulk, but we still never had enough). That and hte fact that the wiper arms always stripped and the wipers flopped around (if they worked at all). All of these years later, we still laugh about it, and JD power finally vindicated my brother and I. Everybody I know that owned a Volkswagon from 1970 to just about present has said the same thing. My brother now has an AUDI TT... after the lesson we learned he still went and got one. He is actually looking into lemon law attorneys regarding this car.

Actually.... A Tunze Stream is NOT a German idea at all. It was DIY idea from America at first that the Germans took to and added the nice electronics to it. Remember the Reeftec pump?

Really the only nice thing about a Tunze Stream is the controller and electronics that controls the pump. Otherwise it's just a simple propeller pump.

The DC pumps will only spin in one direction. They don't need any type of reversing. Which Tunze PUMPS operate off of DC.... well now that I have no idea.
