The "Hitchhiker's Guide" to the Maxi-Stream mod

Not sure about the QO line, because the output of the pump is molded into the body, and only the inlet cover comes off. (Versus a MJ where both the inlet and outlets are detachable. You could plug up the outlet hole I guess... it just might look a little goofy. :p

Same problem exists with the Eheim and Ocean Runner submerisible pumps. (I've thought about doing the big propeller thing too.:D) A Mag-Drive might work okay. Maybe a Mag 5 or 7.

I'm still thinking about the idea of using a DC motor above the tank to spin the prop, so you only see the prop. There was an interesting thread a while back:
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=130625

Otherwise, I have heard of people using saltwater-friendly trolling motors in their tank. The Minn-Kota 'Riptide' is the one. BIG :D

GIT-ER-DONE!:D

I don't remember exactly what the inner body of the QO looks like, but you might consider just putting it on the chopping block and sawing off the entire front end down to the impeller opening. That front part with the outlet is mainly there to give the cap something to thread into.

Heh, well I WAS joking. ;) But people have used that huge one in reef tanks before... I was just referencing it to show zapata EXTREME flow. :D

That other one looks like it has too much junk in the water, that is, if you were meaning for it to seriously be used in place of a MJ mod. I think it would be easier to use a direct-drive pond pump above water and then attach a prop to the shaft below. More neat and tidy that way - though you'd have to come up with a way to have it point horizontally, or just have the flow pointed straight down.

I'll stop my ramblings now...

Sure. I think it's possible to use a pond pump outside with a rod inside the tank and say connect that to a gear box of sorts which will drive the propeller.

It should work. Are pond pumps safe to use outside of water though?

D.

Shoot.... IF y ou use a regualr AC/DC motor instead of the pond pump, you could even add speed control to that if you wanted. Could even add a control board and make the whole thing RC controlled if you want to get fancy :)

Anybody wanna try this?

I think this thread is getting a little too advanced for me....

You're right. It's too advanced for me too
Ok back on topic. Lets see those Maxi mods.

In that case, here is my Seio620 "Maxi-Jet" mod. Still some trouble starting but at least it keeps running and puts out a lot more flow than it originally did. I really like how "clean" it looks (except for the epoxy).

Hmmm Krylon Fusion will take care of that white epoxy :)

Sweet looking housing crypto. I see that you're reusing practicallyu all the SEIO parts :)

nice seio mod, well i am gonna order me a dumas prop to try out on my 820 while i decide if i wanna dive into the QO3000 mod, the outcome ofthe seio mod will let me know if i wanna invest the time to build the QO into a prop pump. anyone have a dumas 1.75 prop lying around they wanna sell.

Tim

crypto, by using the outer housing as you did i think i can eliminate most all of the inner housing to allow the use of a bigger prop.

Tim

dhnguyen, tried to send you another PM but your box is full. Ill try and send tomorrow sometime again.

Thanks again, Mike

ok well i ordered 4 1.75 dumas props to try out. hopefully i can get two of them to spin on the seio, if not i will buy a maxi 1200 and play with it for a while. maybe i wont by that second closed loop quite yet

Tim

Does anyone know who makes that DC powered powerhead? Its a small one, like a micro-sized tunze, but it has a DC adapter on the plug. This pump could be set up w/ a speed control.

well couldnt someone just by a DC motor and then encapsulate it in epoxy to make something liek a tunze
