Not sure about the QO line, because the output of the pump is molded into the body, and only the inlet cover comes off. (Versus a MJ where both the inlet and outlets are detachable. You could plug up the outlet hole I guess... it just might look a little goofy. 
Same problem exists with the Eheim and Ocean Runner submerisible pumps. (I've thought about doing the big propeller thing too.
) A Mag-Drive might work okay. Maybe a Mag 5 or 7.
I'm still thinking about the idea of using a DC motor above the tank to spin the prop, so you only see the prop. There was an interesting thread a while back:

Otherwise, I have heard of people using saltwater-friendly trolling motors in their tank. The Minn-Kota 'Riptide' is the one. BIG
