The Life Reef Skimmer Club

I need more time to evaluate, but I think they both accomplish the same thing. The lifereef is maintenance free so in my case it would outperform the sro3000.

Here it is right now. I cleaned the cup and neck last night. I'll take another pic at the end of the week. This is the 24" body and 8" cup running a mag 12.

Unfortunately, gunk pulled means little as bioloads vary so greatly. A way undersized skimmer or heavily overstocked tank can make the worst skimmers perform beautifully. Vice versa, an oversized skimmer or understocked stock will make the skimmer performance seem dismal.

This is my sro3000 24 hours after being cleaned... 240 total water volume and decent bioload I would say (ten tangs and another 10 medium sized fish)

That's the truth!....In the 90s I had a Berlin Triple Pass skimmer ( Which is a TPOS) in a 180 and it was always pulling lots of very dark skim kate

I have one with a used setup - the skimmer was the real peach with the tank set up - the rest was just "stuff" (175 gal bowfront, 2 external pumps, Tunze wavemaker etc). :D

I'm working on getting my office set up so I can assemble the tank!

Joining the club, just ordered a VS3-30 with a Mag 18. Jeff was very pleasant to talk to, in fact I was just looking to place an order and we still got into a 30 minute conversation none-the-less. This skimmer is replacing my BK Double Cone 150. I'm going on a complete tangent from what I've been using since I started this hobby which has always been some cone shaped pin-wheel design.

Nice.

How come most of the skimmer pics look partially empty of bubbles tho?

I only saw one pic in the last 10 pages that didn't look full of bubbles, I think that one is an issue with the pump or venturi. Every other one looked like Dennis' above.

I made the jump and I am switching to a mazzei venturi skimmer in a couple weeks. Waiting for Jeff to build it. Don't worry Dennis, it is a different Jeff :) (Jeff Wojcik with MTC)

The dwell time on these skimmers is unmatched. My ETSS skims well and makes a LOT of bubbles, but it moves a LOT of water to do it and I am driving it with an Iwaki 100! I'm looking forward to a smaller electric bill and quieter fish room!!!

Question...

I currently run my air line through the wall to pull fresh air to keep my pH up; this doesn't appear to be possible with the way these skimmers, since they are designed to pull air from inside the collection cups, right?

You can, but you just need to make sure you back flush the Venturi from time to time to keep it from getting salt buildup. You can do this by power cycling the pump a couple times a day and it will get flooded with water. At least that is my understanding :)

So basically, if I did that I'm back to the same venturi intake line issues my reef octopus already has a though...

I spoke to Jeff at length and am going with a 30" tall one in the new year. It's scalable, so when I get my 300 I can buy an extension for it and a bigger pump. Love the idea of now pinwheel

If you are not running ozone, you can put a T in the air line between the venturi and cup.

You could tap a hole in the cup and run a 2nd air line to the cup

I would either tap the hole in the cup's lid and attach a 1/4" fitting or drill it out enough to run the external airline into the cup's lid.

That way, you maintain the benefit of using really moist air into the Venturi while still introducing outside air to the skimmer.

That would substantially reduce the outside air being pulled in though because the collection cup is not air tight though, right?
