The Life Reef Skimmer Club

I’m going to take the plunge, and get one of these beasts. Jeff is going to make it a custom height for me so it’ll fit in sump in my cabinet. I’m also going to need a custom add-on to my current Lifereef sump in order to accommodate the bigger skimmer. I’m currently running an SVS3-30 with a custom cup to accommodate my under cabinet height.

Do I really need this? No, but what the heck it’ll be fun to have!

Trying to use outside air

Trying to use outside air

i'm trying to pump in outside air to raise ph. i have an air pump putting air into a tee between skimmer cup and venturi. i was going to run it on a timer, or by ph probe. But when i turn the air pump on, the foam in the skimmer neck goes away. turn it off and foam comes back. too much air being pumped in ?
Would i need to throttle down the air pump so no excess air goes into the skimmer cup?
thanks for any help.

The venturi will naturally suck air in, I would remove the air pump. I can imagine for some physics reason the forced air could interior the venturi from operating correctly.

But the instructions on for the skimmer says it won't suck in air from outside if you have it tee'd off. they say you need an air pump to pump the air in?

Are we still talking about LifeReef?

I guarantee the venturi will pull a portion of the air from the external tubing. Worst case put a pinch valve on the tubing coming from the overflow cup, forcing the venturi to pull more outside air.

When is your skimmer going to be ready???

Jeff didn't say exactly, but he wants to get that skimmer out the door so he did say he's going to start cutting parts soon. I also need an add-on box for my Lifereef sump to accommodate this beast, so I'll have to wait for him to make that too. Good news is that it's basically just an acrylic box, so it shouldn't take him much time at all.

It's all about the size of the pump which determines how much air is getting injected into the skimmer. Also, the type of Venturi in this case.

The pump I was using was overkill and only half the size of the pump I use now in the 160G. I also use the mazzei for even more air.

I guess the tank speaks for itself.

What size Mazzei Venturi do we need ? Is it 3/4 or an 1 inch?

There is 100% a difference in air volume and therefore I would say better skimmate production. Whether it is necessary from any individual tank is impossible for me to say. Below is a link to photos from May 2019 when I installed mine.

Nice I just ordered Mazzei 3/4 from Amazon... it'll be here tomorrow... I also ordered DCS15000 feed pump to replace the DCS10000 that I am using now to fed the skimmer running it at 100%... mine is just stock 24"...hopping for improvement but will see.. DT is SCA 120 and sump is 40b no baffles

Looking forward to seeing the results..

Greetings! I'm setting up a 100-gallon tank, fish & softies. I realize this is a dedicated forum, but am I right that these are the skimmers to go for?
