The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Im waiting for my new hammerhead magnet to get in to clean my glass to take pics, its filthy right now. This tank is sooo hard to clean and I dont reach the bottom third of my tank w a scrapper because the canopy is soo tall, I cant wait til I mod that on sat too, Ill take pics of that as well along w my new addtitions.

Just found this thread thanks to Michael. Here is a pic of my tank. I want to change the power heads so any recommendations would be appreciated.

hi-rav, well first advice would be to clean the phs you have now, then move the rear ph to the corner postion at the back about 2" under the surface and poit upwards, then alter the position of the 2 on the sides slightly so they point towards each other and slightly to the front, hopefully they will clash with each other and the rear ph to cause more movement in there, see how that goes and then report back, we will see if we can improve things with what you have

RufRidn Welcome to our lil club, I agree w what Michael said that should help your circulation, but unless your going to shell out the big bux for a tunze or those new bad a... vortechs, Im good w the Koralias. Are those flame wrasses? I am thinking about getting a pair of those, my LFS here tells me they can get me the pair for like 200.
Nice job Michael, I see your out recruiting, NICE, Now everytime I see a post on a thread, Im looking at the sig for the tank type, lol.

Im going to clean them up tonight.

Im willing to get either tunze or vortechs I just dont know which ones yet.

Yes they are flame wrasses. Ive had the pair for about a year and they are great fish. Always together. I was lucky and got a pair froma group buy for 140 I believe.

Yes, sump and skimmer are running. There have been 2 changes. I removed the scwd. Too much noise with the pump I want to use, so I just t'd the pump off. I also found some room so I'm gonna change the fuge. I'll take pics and explain tonight.

RufRidn; I have ordered the Vortech pumps for my system. I have done some research and they seem like the better system of the two you mentioned. First, they have more features as a programmable unit and second they have a much lower profile in your tank. I am getting two of the MP20s for the 92gal corner. The other nice things about the Vortech is;
They are cheaper than the Tunze
They product support is outstanding (see sponsor forum on RC)
You can upgrade the pumps to higher-output MP40s easily

Yes, they are expensive, but i haven't found a programmable pump that is inexpensive anywhere. My two cents.

I won't receive the pumps for about 3 weeks, maybe 4... (long story) but once I get them i'll post here for sure... This will take me from 2400gph to about 4000 peak... and create that random flow I'm questing for....

I checked that out. Im pretty sure Im going to upgrade just waiting to hear back from ecotech on what they recommend.

Yea, I'd love one but maybe later. Anywho, here's the sump and skimmer running.

Here's the extra room I've been thinking about for the fuge.

We'll see, since no macro as of yet. I've started seeing diatoms so I added a couple cups of live sand fron the frag tank. I'll cut the photo period down to about 4 hours a day for a week or so to keep the diatoms in check. I put on the 14 k bulb I'm going to be using to give it a bit of break in. If you guys don't have one of those luminbright reflectors, you've never seen how bright 250 watts can be.

Question: I'm building a sump from a 40g long. is 10 inches big enough for the skimmer section? I dont have the skimmer yet because I have to upgrade, but I'm putting in my baffles in tonight.

Depends on the skimmer, I would spec out the skimmer you are going to get first. My Tunze only takes about 5x5, but I would love to get a bk200 mini and need just at 10".

probably is yes, but have you thought of the option where the skimmer is outside the sump or hung on it?

It truelly depends on the skimmer, My skimmer is HUGE, there would be no way for me to use only 10", also my sump is 16" tall which allows me to have more water in there and holds all back syphon water. Trust me wit until you get the skimmer before you set the sump up. Even if you have the foot print you might not be able to get the skimmer in inside the stand, you may need to put them in together, and wont be able to do so if the sump is inside, filled and operational. Just a suggestion. I had to build my sump w the skimmer inside of it already.

i have noticed actually bernie that you guys use big skimmers compaired to us, my skimmer is designed for a 175 gallon tank, which is nearly twice the size of my tank and yet seems small to most of you guys skimmers

i suppose americans have bigger ones do they:eek:

LMAO, yeah I gues we do, but then again in my particular tank, I will be like Eric (Flfireman) that at its max holds 18-20 fish. I plan on stocking 15-17 fish. My Skimmer is rated for over a 300 gallon tank. Truthfully I have never heard any one complain about bigger being better, lol!!!!
