The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

hes a beauty alright steve, definately a superb picture in quality as well, the first 1 is worthy of a pic of the month shot

My best friend has a 55 gallong corner tank with 2 koralia 3's and a custom build 30 gallong sump which fits in the cabinet that the original tank stands on. He also has a 2x250w 20k MH fixture. I will try to get some pictures of it. so that you guys with corner tanks can see the design of the sump and maybe copy it if you are looking to do a sump/display design!

appreciate that pal:) you could also get him to join rc and the forum as well, all folk are very welcome here, only 1 rule you must own a corner tank to be added to the members list, but non corner owners are very welcome to add comments and join in as well if the input is constructive

Jesse - You are asking for some trouble from the Tang Police!
Nah he's alright... That little guy is probably plenty happy he's in Jesse's tank now, and not slated to go into my 40g rimless. ;)

YAY!!!!!!!! My 250watt 20k bulb came in last night!!!! I had it on for about an hour last night and i couldn't be happier with the color choice! I am going to have to take the 12k out of my T-5 fixture and add another Reef Blue 10k or actinic to really get what i want, but it looks so awesome! Very shimmery, and pics are on the way! I want so bad to just get it on all day, but i'm starting at 1 hour and increasing by 15min every other day until i get to 6 or 7 hours. Also a new K-4 is on the way soon and is going to be modded with MJ kit, and my K-3 is going to get my old K-4 impeller in hopes of higher flow.

Speaking of new-stuff....

The Vortec pumps have arrived.... so I'll be throwing 2xMP40's into my tank in the next few days/week or two. I have to move my tank about 1/4 inch from the wall (yeah, HUGE PAIN IN THE BACKSIDE) to accommodate the housing...

Oh, and I have ordered a Coralvue Octopus Huricone CAT2E for my system, which should arrive by end of April... I hope... And I will be re-designing the sump-room... starting next week I think... waiting on some metal-shelving.

Oh, and my LFS has received another order from Australia of SPS and LPS... though I only have room for some SPS at this point...

Oh, and I am a lazy-so-and-so because I haven't taken any photos in ages for this thread.... Flame away.. i deserve it.

I am new to the hobby, in the corner club. how do i enlist? If there is something to enlist in?
sean g

Welcome to our club Sean G, to enlist you just need to post a picture of your tank, so that we may verify that it is truely a corner tank, then we have a panel that evaluates if its worthy of our club. After that, IF you are approved, IF... You then pay a $55 fee.

J/k...lol. Im just messing with you welcome aboard, Just like that you are in. Although a picture would still be nice, specially since I've never seen a 36g corner tank. That must be extra hard to work because it is so small... I look forward to hearing more from you & your tank!!!

Show up a pic. That's all that's required. Don't want no wannabe's here. Just kidding, but a pic would be nice!!!!

Hookup, I am envious as I have yet to get my Vortech... I was thinking guys, would my $$$ be better spent if I bought another K-4 & a UV sterilizer or the Vortech???

as mentioned by the guys you are now a member, i will add you to the list, welcome aboard, whatever your aquarium looks like at the moment is irrelevent, a pic of any kind will be great, dont worry too much about superb shots etc, even though there are a couple of tanks our members have which are stunning, most of us have average systems, we all got to start somewhere, welcome again sean:)

I had to keep my blond naso tang in my corner tank for a few months back.
During the summer my 135gal tanks sump started to leak so I had to tear it down compleatly since the sump could only be removed though the top of the stand.

The Naso Tang was happy & healthy when he was in the 60gal corner but hes nowhere near full grown. After 2 or 3 montsh I got the 135 going again and he was the 2nd fish back in the tank.

I was suprised how easy it was to get him out of the 60gal tank.
I just baited a 2.5gal glass pickle bottle with mysis and waited for him to go for the bait...in 4min of waiting and one fall swoop I managed to catch the Blong Naso, My coral beauty, 2 skunk cleaners & a blood shrimp and a chromis.

IMO UV sterilizers are worthless... for the cost and effort you just do not gain that much... maybe in a FOWLR it might cut down some types of diseases... but i think they are not so good...

Ozone might be a way to go, I want to run that myself, but you need a good ORP metering system and a controller to ensure you do not over-dose your system...

But to your question... I think that proper flow is more important than UV or Ozone or a lot of other stuff... If you have good flow now, then maybe consider something else... if, like me, your flow is limited, then getting that problem fixed and fixed right is the priority.

The reef-mode of these pumps should keep the detritus totally suspended and i'm jazzed to get it running... and the 2xMP40's is HUGE overkill for my 90g, but I'll run them at 40% power so IF i want to create a hurricane in my tank, i can, once a month or two just to blast the rocks clean... assuming I do not create a sand-storm at the same time..lol... but the choice was running MP20's at close to 100% power vs MP40's at 40% power... and I understand that the noise of the pumps is much less if you run them at a lower % power output... so I went MP40 route...

Get the VORTECH, you'll be happy... 100% guaranteed, i'll even buy them back from you if you are not happy, and can find me to hold me to that agreement... haha...

OK, Where do I sign up? My name is Ed and I am a corner reef owner.
I have a 92 gallon, and it's been running for 6 years, with an interruption for about a year when I converted it to a Seahorse tank.

Bernie - It depends on how large of a UV your wanting. If you can afford a Vortec, i'd say go for it. I guess any UV is better than none, and the bigger the better with them (to a point) as well as flow. I don't know if you have a sump or not, but if your looking at just a HOB UV i'd spend your money on the Vortec. If it's going in-line on your sump, make sure it's after skimmer and filters, and before your fuge. I think higher flow would be way more benneficial to your tank than any HOB UV you'd find. Many of the particles that would pass through with out being filtered first would be too large for the UV to do anything with, and your bulb would become dirty pretty quickly.

P.S. More tank pics are on thier way tonight!
