what does your filtration consist of:
what would you consider "must have" and "nice to have"

filter socks, carbon, UV, live rock on my tank and for my personal preference all of them are must haves. Each one servers its purpose.

This is my 1st post on this thread and it is safe to say that this tank setup is what we all envision as the illusive "Perfect Tank". I'll put it to you this way Mako, I just checked out all the pictures and read MOST of the thread and now I must clean the drool off my keyboard.
Here's a question. Have you started fragging any of your corals? I'm sure you get offered tons of money to ship sps frags, no?

Thank you, it is my perfect tank and thats all I can ask for. When setting up this tank I was able to get the equipment I always wanted and set the tank up to my plans.

I always have to frag my corals sometimes its necessary to frag to help keep some of the corals in control and away from more prized sps. Other times I break them by accident or my fish help me frag LOL

MakoJ, where did you buy your Echinata?

I got it from TexasTodd he said it was a Bali Echinata but I will have to ask him to see if he remembers where he got it.

wow.......... I just started my first 55 gallon tank 3 months ago. and your tank is Beautiful. Great inspiration. Hope i win the lottery to do a tank like that one day. Great job! i just sat and read the entire thread. absolutly amazing!

Hey makoJ,

I just read the entire thread. If it was asked I don't recall. Do you quarantine your fish and corals before adding them to the main display?

I can't imagine not doing so and loosing those beautiful fish or those gorgeous corals to ich or aefw's.

You guys in texas must have some really good aquarium shops that give out good information. My tank is in horrible shape with a pest algae and I am going broke trying to kill it :) and it has killed a couple of my SPS frags. Very frustrating to say the least.

You have some of the best lookin corals i have ever seen, if u ever want to sell any of ur frags and can ship them too PA let me know i would be very interested. Always enjoy lookin at ur tank.

Sorry don't know why but I haven't been getting notification of posts to my thread I just happened to look in the Large tank forum and saw my post?? So I tried re-subscribing to my thread hopefully that will work

I don't quarantine my fish or my coral but would love to have a quarantine tank just don't have the space for it. But I've only added 3 new coral in a year and all of the incoming coral goes through a bath of Interceptor/TMPCC/Flatworm exit and are inspected before put into the tank. Not really worried about ich I have a lot of UV on the tank and have never seen it in this tank.

I don't think I've learned anything from LFS's lol I do my own research before buying and I read as much info I can about the hobby. Pests are unfortunately something that everyone will have to deal with one way or another I don't know a reefer in my area that hasn't had one of the many lol I hope you conquer your pest!

What is your reason for running a shorter than average photoperiod for the MH's? Do you believe you achieve richer sps colors with this photoperiod? Have you ever run a longer photoperiod and if so what did you experience?

VHO's are on for 12hrs, MH's come on at 1pm and go off at 6:30pm

Well, I bit the bullet Mako after seeing your tank progress. I ordered a 360 gallon 96x36x25 and I'm copying your setup as much as possible. I need to order the protein skimmer and am torn between your Deltec and the Reeflo 250 Orca. If you could do it over again, would you still go with the Deltec?

Again, great tank. You've got the nicest tank I've seen. Period.

Cheers,
Los

Main reason is electrical cost I usually up the hours during the winter but I didn't do it this winter as I'm getting plenty of growth and color so If figured why change it.

I don't think my colors have anything to do with photoperiod but I don't know as I haven't changed my period since I set the tank up.

Nice! love the depth on yours. I think that would be the one thing I would change if I could on mine.

I've never ran or seen an Orca in person but they look very impressive so if I had to do it again I don't know the Deltec works amazingly so I just don't think I would change for that fact.

thanks!

Def one of the best tanks I have ever seen in my top 10

Thanks for the huge compliment!

If I might chime in on the Orca/Deltec debate I agree that both are great skimmers, but have any of ya'll actually cleaned a sequence pump?

Huge PITA if everything goes smoothly, even worse if you experience what I have with the 20 or so pumps we've taken apart. Apparently in shipping, the seal that keeps the saltwater from contact with the outside gets knocked slightly causing it to rust. When you take apart the pump you find a rusty nasty mess and we've just begun stocking the replacement seals so that our pumps aren't out of commision for days at a time. The process can take between one and two hours just to clean the pump, not including an acid bath!

Eheims are EASY to clean!

got the new reactor working and producing good numbers here is a shot of the beast rocking and rolling

254933239_8DLwy-O.jpg

Mike (Dudester) came over and brought his PAR meter with him so I got to get some PAR numbers on my tank. Following what Mike told me did on his picture, numbers that are larger are closer to the front of the tank vice versa

I didn't make an image with values for when the VHO's were the only bulbs on but the numbers are:

72" VHO above water value was: 425
just below water value: 180
24" VHO above water value was: 250
just below water value: 156

Below values on the FTS are with all VHO's and MH's on. I did the readings with both Radiums and 10k reeflux bulbs both were very similar in numbers.

Starting from right to left the ballasts go regular electric, 430 electric, 430 electric, regular electric.

Thanks Mike for coming over and chatting reef and taking some par values!
