Very interesting. I'm frankly surprised that there is still easily double the light at the bottom of the tank with MH as there is light right under the surface for VHO. I would have guessed they were the same. Thanks!

Thanks Mike for coming over and chatting reef and taking some par values!
Any time, Brian, I'll take any opportunity available to go to see your incredible system and to chat with you and Christina. I'm already looking forward to the next visit.

Los - I've seen it time and time again. On every tank I've tested with the PAR meter, I've been impressed with just how little penetration is achieved with VHO's. That's not to say that they're not beneficial, as the light clearly contributes to the colors of the corals, but I don't think they contribute much to the PAR necessary for coral growth. I'm also struck by how much the PAR is reduced by moving just beneath the water surface.

is that the largest deltec reactor and what type of media is being used and how much? also what type of controller and how many lbs is that CO2 tank? sorry if too many questions

Yea I was a baffled my by the VHO readings myself

nice PAR numbers...got to wonder about all tis discussion of photo inhibition.

I've read about it but have read conflicting information on it. I do know that my corals are only getting close to 6 hours of the high PAR values.

Yes its the largest one they make, it holds 84 lbs Rowalith C+ media and thats how much is in it now
That is a 20lb C02 tank and for now its controlled by an Aqua Medic PH controller.
No problem keep the questions coming lol

Is the Rowalith C+ media the finer-grained stuff? If so, have you ever had your reactor clogg up on you or have the media start to form lumps? I've been using the big GenX media and it works okay.

Never had a problem with clogging the media is designed to fluidize in the chamber and there are filter pads keeping it from getting out. I have to turn the recirculation pump a 1/4 turn back to keep the media from churning so much.

What is the name of the pink coral with the green polyps. If you ever want to send a frag of that let me know how much. Tank looks great. The best I have ever seen.

You have excellent PAR towards the bottom of the tank. I dont have that.. Mine is in the 100's to 200's. Im also glad to see that you are getting 600 to 800 PAR on those SPS in the middle! WOW! And I thought I was giving mine too much PAR with 400. Makes me want to lower my lights a little more to give it more since lowering it creates that extra 100 to 200 punch per inch. The above water PAR was similiar to mine as well. You must have clearer water than me? ;)

Just curious. Did you test in the water with all circulation off?

That is the Kingfish Tricolor but unfortunately the colony fell into my green slimer colony and I only have a small frag of it left.

Thanks Edward!
I didn't think to test with the circulation off I will have to do that the next time.

When do you want me to come back, Brian?

I love this tank. Im running a similar setup. 240 with ssb, no fuge filter socks and lots of flow.. I just want to come close to what this tank looks like..

I think he should copy and paste parts of this build thread into a "How to" manual for setting up an SPS tank with crazy colors. Love this setup!! TOTD->Tank of the Decade!

No worries. The reason I asked is because circulation gives you sporadic readings and some may be high and some may be low. The shimmer effect is actually more intense light in which you will get the higher par readings. Those would be the readings you want because that is what the coral is getting, but not 24/7. And I know you have great flow that creates that shimmer.

Thanks for sharing your findings! It really gives us a wake up call on the needs for these corals.
