had room for some durso's but I've never been really happy with them I've used the cj standpipes on my last 3 tanks and have always been happy so I will always use them

Are the CJs quieter ?, more flow ? what about the dursos made you unhappy ? (and happy with the CJs ?)

My durso's were still not quite and one got clogged one time so I pulled them on the old tank and I was not sleeping very well b/c of the flushing sounds. A friend told me about them and I have to say the flow very good and are extremely silent.

I could have just had a bad durso but I know these work and wont go back.:)

I've been using a CJ on my 135g cube for the last two years and it has been great! Quiet and efficient, I took it out after almost one year and it was clean as a whistle inside.

Got my new toy in today:
Milwaukee Instruments Smart Lux Light Meter
p_26396_35987P.jpg

The level of intensity on a natural reef with clear water will average about 20,000 lux at a depth of 15 feet, and 10,000 lux at 30 feet.

in my tank on the bottom directly below a 400w 10k reeflux I'm reading 18,658 lux under my ushio which is about 5month old bulb I'm reading 16,343 lux

on the top of the tank directy under the water's surface it averages between 25,000-36,000lux with a few hot spots reaching 42,457 lux one which is on top of my birdsnest.

I'm going to write down these mesuremnets and measure each month to make sure my lamps are producing what they need too.

It's cool that you know exactly how to replicate the lighting of the ocean's reef in your tank with your lux meter. great job with the tank. I'll keep tagging along to see how things mature.

I have been thinking about getting one of those. any surpises? Like does it need to be calibrated with 3 solutions every 20 minutes? :D

hehehehe.. yea, what jnarowe said :).

Have been considering a light meter of one sort or another also. Feed us some info on the one you have :)

I was expecting it to have a calibration regime but nope just put the 9v battery in and turn it on. very easy to use
There are 3 different scales which you can choice from 1X, 10X, 100X and it all depends on the light level but its easy to switch between them its just a press of a button.

So far I'm very glad I got it!

ahhh, just re-read.. this is a lux meter, not a par meter (like the Licor or Apogee) that Sanjay and the rest use. What made you go with this one over the others ? Price ?

it was cheap so I figured I would try it out and see how it worked then maybe get a par meter later.
