The T5 Q&a Thread

Grim or anybody, I'm in desperate need of help. I have to decide today if I want to go with a 72" 125g tank or go with a standard 48" 120.

I currently run a 6x48 Tek t5 setup on my 48" 75 and was going to use the same setup for a 120g. If I go with a 72" tank, what should I do? I would like to stick with t5 lighting but so far I've only found 60" retrofits at reefgeek. Should I go with 2 36" 4x39 watt Tek setups or just go metal halide?

I am soon going to be setting up a new tank with a 8 bulb T5 fixture.

What do you think of the following.

Giesemann Actinic Plus
KZ Coral Light New Generation 14k
KZ Fuji Purple
Giesemann Actinic Pure
Giesemann Actinic Plus
KZ Coral Light New Generation 14k
KZ Purple Fuji
Giesemann Actinic Pure

I'm aware this is guna be quite blue, but i'm cool with that as long as my SPS don't suffer. (water depth is 21")

I'd personally use a daylight lamp of some sort in place of the second actinic but it should be fine.

So whats the point of the 2" reflectors if you can't cet the end caps in 2"?

You can, Aquactinics makes 2" centered standoffs for endcaos or you can use the twistlocks.

has anyone had success with fitting 8xicecap reflectors above a 90?

Multiply 2.5" x 8 and measure your tank opening.

You would want 2 6x39 T5's for the 125 if you want to keep more than just softies.

I have a 120 4'x2'x2'. I want to switch to t5 rom a 2x250 setup. I want a fixture that I can keep anything (nice sps).

Do I need more than 6 bulbs? Will the tek do it or do I need something like the constellation, solar flare, or better?

What bulbs will get me the look of a phoenix 14k bulb?

Either the 7 lamp constellation or 8 lamp Powermodule or Solar Flare will work.

Hi Grim,

My constellation just arrived and I got a free aquaz 54wt ocean pro bulb with it. This is what you told me to get, can I substitute any of the below for this one to save money?

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Aquablue

The Aquablues are more white than blue so this wont really look as blue as the lamp names indicate. I'd grab an extra blue plus. Everyone perceives light differently but I would be you will like the color better if you use a blue Plus where the rear aquablue is. If not you have an extra lamp just in case.

Sorry forgot to add: is there a difference besides the price between these two bulbs

54W Super Actinic T5 HO Fluorescent UV Lighting None

SF1005 54W Super Actinic Blue 03 T5 HO Fluorescent Sfiligoi None

Other than the color spectrum what is the difference between bulb types?

The acintics- are they just for color or are they good for growth? My mushrooms seem to open up quite a bit when they're the only lights on.

The 10k, 12k, 14k, 20k, ect- Is that just the lights intensity or does it have to do with the color spectrum it covers? What effects do they have on growth?

Right now I've got 2 acintics, ones a deep blue & one's a purplish blue. I also have a pure white light & a red/orangish light. Either the white or red/orange light didn't have a label on it. I want to say one says Pro Color on the bulb. (Bought the setup from another member so I'm going to use the bulbs that came with it until I get corals that will require more light.)

They're arranged from front to back:
Blue
Red/Orange
White
Purple/Blue

That seem right on a 55g?

hey grim,
how far should t5 bulbs be from the water surface?

4" or so is optimum. Don't go too much lower than that or you'll need to wipe everything down every couple days

The arrangement is good. Spectrum is the main difference between lamps. The purplish (violet) lamp is a Actinic. The other is a Blue.

Hi...

I have 4 x 96W PC bulbs on a retrofit kit from hamilton tech.

The bulbs have been dying every couple weeks...something is wrong with the wiring (i bought the set up used). They lose connection and fizzle. I dont know if its actually the wiring or the ballast or what.

That being said, i am thinking of switching to T-5. Its mostly going to be softies, LPS, and fish....no SPS corals.

The tank is 48" long.

I have a wood canopy over top of the tank.

What is the best way for me to go about adding T-5?

Looking at DRS foster and smith I see a lot of fixtures that dont look like they would fit under my hood and the only retro kit they sell has a ballast that is only for up to 4 bulbs and from what i've read you need more than that with T5

any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Grant
