The Tank that REEF CENTRAL Built - 450 gal display, 800 gal volume

Hey all. Not really an update on the tank as things are static on that right now. Just letting everyone know I am still alive.

Tank status: still have about 500 lbs of Liverock cooking in the garage. Have not ordered anything new in preparation for the main build as we are in 100% save mode leading up to closing on the house.

Job Status: the new job is great, but has been chewing up all of my time. After 10-12 hour days, and which ever child sports event or practice we have that evening pretty much just falling into bed to do it again.

House status: 29 days till closing! And any and all free time is devoted to getting ready for that event.

Do have a question for everyone. The transition tank is starting to have some corals look poor in it. Our giant Pink Monti, the Idaho grape monti look faded. A few favia, and acans are fading, and a cluster of daisy polyp are looking rough.
Most things look great still, acros look great.
I tested tonight.
PO4 - (0.0-0.02)
NO3 - (0.0 - 0.25) but closer to 0
Calcium - 530
Alkalinity - 14

I know calcium and Alkalinity are high, but those are not off the chart.... I slowed the drip from the calcium rx.

Anyone have any ideas? Should I be more concerned about the calcium levels?

If your monti caps are fading that is possibly a sign of potassium deficiency. Test K with Salifert K and then dose Brightwell Potassion-P (powdered stuff) if needed.

Sounds familiar. I know a Rachel Vaughn who married a Brian, but I don't think he took her last name. :spin3:

Why would I know the name?

He is a Charleston area reefer. He runs a tank service company. Just didn't know how tight the reefing community is there.
My brother and his wife just closed an a new house this week so I might be in the area in a few weeks. I will let you know.

There really is no community here. We used to have a Charleston Reefers forum but that died along with the local club.

IMHO that alk is to high. Unstable alk will also cause those conditions also. gotta try and lower that to between 8-12 ppm. Just a suggestion

What would cause the all to be that high? Is the calcium a concern also? I'm not certain that I have the calcium rx dialed in properly, should I just turn it off for a while until the all comes down?

I would slowly turn it down one day and test the next. If you totally shut it off the alk drop could shock your corals. The key is what alk level works for you. As I stated for me as an example, I keep my present tank around 8.5.
