therman's 40B SPS tank, TOTM Oct 2001 and reef nostalgia thread

Tim, look what you did. All these old reefers coming out of the woodwork. Good to see all you guys again.

I remember seeing Tracy Grays tank in person before the crash. Even with all the things I've seen over the years, I think back on that system, it's fish and corals and .... I'm still pretty impressed with it. Losing that would have affected me like the loss of losing a child. Probably more since the tank doesnt talk back ... or keep moving back into my house ....

I can't believe you guys are dragging me out of my horse ranch induced happyness to mess about with this reef thing again. Why.

PS: Waiting for my daughter to move out and Aquaman is going to set up the 65 again ... this time, he's got a rimless. But I'm being a ... well .... "insistent me" and making him keep the canopy on it somehow.

There's NO skool like the OLD skool

Good to see you boys are all still alive and doing well .... We are all staying out of trouble, yes?

RIF .... The store was not so much Steve or Tracys. It belonged to a guy by the name of Andrew. He originally owned the office space Steve was in, then rented another store a few doors down. One space was the actual retail store and where he built his stands and canopies he sold, and the one Steve operated out of was simply for frags and corals being sold online, holding tanks, etc.

If I remember right, I believe eventually Andrew sold or gave Steve the store. There's some drama with someone that was supposed to be a partner with them in all that mess but I dont recall details other than he was a douchebag, I told him off (shocker) in regards to his lack of skill in reef keeping ability, said douchebag turned to Steve for support and Steve said "She's rarely wrong" and left it at that.

Kinda miss chatting with you guys ... I'm so busy these days ... but I do think back on our Friday night chats with deciphering Phillstone and Dwayne handing out rope lights and programs at the door.

just read the archive TOTM thread. WOW 400W of MH over a 40 breeder! That photo period was used with that much light?

Very impressive in its simplicity!

400W of MH plus 440W of VHO :D

I think it was close to 12 hrs VHO, 8 or 10 MH. Might be in the Paletta book, I don't have it handy.

I'm not sure I'd describe this as "simplicity"....also proof that a functional SPS tank doesn't have to be loaded with fancy expensive equipment

The Aquaclear added quite a bit of laminar flow and acted kind of like a sump, the 3 maxi jets on the Wavemaster added the randomness.

Lights off top down...corals still had some growing to do when this photo was taken

Wow, those years were indeed good times in the hobby. In my area, it was far more niche and far less mainstream at the time. That, like most things, was both good and bad, but it was all fun nonetheless.

Tim, your tank was an inspiration every time I saw it, along with Chuck F "mtndewman's" tank and several others. I was surprised to see pics of them both resurfacing. Even today, they are still inspiring to me. Thanks for the nostalgia!

Tim, got love that top off:D Not much could go wrong there:lol: That tank was amazing...i modeled my 58g SPS tank off that with the lighting...talk about some heat!

Adrienne, great to see you:) Say hello to Aquaman as well.

Only once did I have a giant snail pull down both switches at once. I still use the same system today, and am just careful not to allow big snails access to the floats! Every now and then it is a good idea to spin them to make sure they are not gunked up with anything. They are pretty reliable, though I have had 2 go bad in about 10 years of using them.

And Grandis, I am still running AquaC skimmers! Old habits die hard. I've never been into expensive overdriven skimming when most of what they pull out is calcium carbonate :p I think they are mainly just fancy aerators.

Hehe, there is nothing like the AquaC skimmers!! The best ever IMO.
I love mine. I've got the 180 with the Mag7. I'm finishing my DIY rocks this month and still have to cure them in order to start the system.
The skimmers nowadays are OK, but mostly to show off too!! Nothing like the AquaCs...

I still have my Maxi Jet 1000 too, since 1995! They don't make those 1000 anymore. Never dies!! :D

This was one of my most prized acros from the tank. Came from Harbor Aquatics as a Solomon Is. mariculture. Before "torts" were everywhere, this was an extraordinary coral. I recently picked up the Poletti yellow-tip austere from rtbm though, and I think it has satisfied my craving to get this one back! Still waiting to see more blue in it though.

That's a great picture! back then those were prime!
Do you still keep any of the corals from that tank?

Grandis.

Not that I can definitively trace back. Back in 2007 Menard told me he had some of the pink rim montipora from the middle. I would absolutely love to get some back.

Just do it man!
Is that a P. cactus towards the right side?

Please tell us more about the zoas in that tank. Any close pics of those zoas?
I remember back then most people thought zoas were the least and the Acros were the best.
Nowadays with the cartoon names everything changed. Even in regards to the SPS.
Waiting for more pics...

Grandis.

The Pavona was awesome too, fluorescent green potato chips. Haven't found another quite like it since then either (though I haven't tried too terribly hard).

Here are two more plating Montipora from that tank, that Maximus sent me from CA. The first was one of the best looking I have ever seen....glowing fuchsia rim, deep vivid green coenosteum with bright white polyps. Never seen anything like it again:

The second had a majorly fat pink rim on it, and kind of a green-gold coenosteum. However, this photo was taken under a 10k Ushio with zero blue supplementation, so I imagine it had quite a glow under actinics:

And one last plating monti, very cool coloration with dark green, golden brown, and purple polyps. No clue what this would have grown into, another from Harbor Aquatics:

You are in luck. I got a frag of it from Menard about a month ago and it is doing very well. Growing and nicely colored. As soon as it is a little bigger, I'll send some over your way.

Isn't this the Leng Sy one? If so, I got it as well.
