These tangs worth $2000

My local lfs had a service client whos tank started to leak and decided not to rebuild. He gave my lfs all of his fish and corals. They got a large gem tang, larhe sohal tang, large adult chevron tang, blue tang, yellow tang, and a black onx clownfish still left all healthy and fat. I get along pretty good wit the owners at the store and as a joke i asked if they would take $2000 for all of them and the owner said yes but only to me. They have the gem listed for more than that. But I know they want them sold as not many people coming in to spend what they are asking for the fish. So what do you guys think?

Yes. I'd buy a healthy gem tang for that price sight unseen, forget the others, if you can get it and it's healthy just think of everything else as being free

Gems by themselves can cost that (however of late they are a littlr cheaper). However a healthy fat tang in captivity. I'd jump at it if you have the room (tank size) and $$.

I am in the middle of my 240 gallon build and by time I get water in it and cycled may be another month till its ready

I would have a good think about it, there are alot nicer fish for that price.
But it does come down to your eye's.

2 grand is a steal for those fish especially having a Gem tang in the mix. That is if you were planning on getting these fish to begin with. If so I'd say why are you wasting time asking us :lmao: I'd pay the man and have him keep them until your tank's cycled then get one or two at a time, don't add that many fish all at once, so the bacteria have a chance to catch up to support the livestock in your tank.

Don't do it.
Plan and build for fish you want, not what you buy on impulse. You'll be happier in the long run.

This. And for sure I would not get a sohal tang. Never again. I have kept a gem tang; for me not a premium fish despite the price.

I suggest not to do it also, 240 doesn't seem large enough for all of the tangs. (Tang police is here [emoji6]).

If you really want a baller fish, get the pack and sell everything but the gem. You dont want to risk the fighting. Keep the gem as your center fish and build around it.

But you can fins small baby gem tangs for 1300-1500. I prefer small fish. A little riskier but more fun to watch

Initially I was just interested in the sohal and when they agreed to my joking price e got me thinking. I am really only interested in the sohal and the gem but was also thinking if got it for the right price to try and sell the gem. All of these fish have lived together in harmony for 3 years so they fact that they all including the sohal all get along and that was part of the apeal to me

Skip the Sohal for sure and the other tangs together minus the Gem are basically worth whatever it is you see fit... (I would give them $0 since I don't care for the other tangs) Gems are cool tangs (I have a 3" one) but not for 2K, you could easily get one for $5-600 cheaper. Mine is in a 625g 7x6x2ft tank and he is still aggressive, I would see issues with one for future inhabitants, especially in a 240g

Offer him $17 (not $18!!) for the yellow tang.

I really like Chevron tangs. And there is something to be said for getting a healthy fat fish that know how to live in a box.

I will say sometimes you gotta just go for it. In my last tank a reefer who was moving was selling a purple tang for $60. I hadn't really considered a purple tang (I already had a yellow tang), but I saw how much they normally sold for, so I did it. I sold the yellow tang to another reefer and that purple was my favorite fish. Something about knowing that it was expensive and (relatively) fancy (nothing like a gem, but also more than a yellow, blue, or kole) made me like him more. Like my tank was pretty cool because I had a fancy fish in there. I would think the gem might be the same for you. Even if you hadn't considered one, once you have it, I bet you'll find it'll be your favorite.

Or at least the one you stress the most over...

He'd probably take $1,500 for just the gem.

I wasn't originally considering a gem tang simply based on the prices. Is the problem with the sohal just the aggression? Are they only problems with other tangs or all fish?

Sohal tangs are fine for a while (in larger tanks) but all of a sudden a switch flips and they become killers.
