This One Goes Out To All Those Whos Wife Said NO!!!

You can drill the sump for the external pump, and the pump could feed the skimmer standing in the sump.

So melev just cause its recommended why couldnt i still use the internal pumps ( mag 12) for the skimmer. Is there any other reason than fitting the skimmer in the sump. does this change anything if i still do internal? i am ready to order the parts please help.

With an in-sump skimmer, you have to have enough room in the skimmer section to hold the sump with its pump.

No, unless there is something you've not clarified. It should be big enough to fit the skimmer, its pump, and the bubble tower. That's it.

melev would you suggest using the ehiem external, then also buying the ehiem for my return internally. Then i could use the drill and make whole but still keep the pumps the same. I have heard using the mags externally makes then run very hot.

ok melev last question i hope. If i made the skimmer section 2 ft, the return to tank section 6 inches and the fuge 18 inches using two mag 12s, would you see any problems with this?

Using two identical pumps is ideal. That way if the return pump breaks for some reason, you can borrow the skimmer pump for the duration to keep flow in the tank.

Internal or external, the Eheim has a great reputation.

I've used Mags internally and externally. They may leak, which can be annoying which is why they are sold as internal pumps. Mag pumps tend to add some heat to the water, and two Mag 12s will definitely affect the water temp.

Why two feet? Is that pump and skimmer going to need 24" of space? What is the minimum space needed for the skimmer, its pump, and the bubble tower? Try to picture sliding all three into a snug box. That's what you want to know.

Do not create a tiny return section. It should be big enough to let you run the tank unattended without an ATO for 24 hours. Better to take the sump's length, subtract the skimmer section, subtract 3" for the bubble trap, and take what is left and divide it in half (half for the return, half for the refugium).

Nick, is it possible to cut down the skimmers current plumbing to make is shorter? Can you ask the guy you bought ti from how he was using it. Maybe that would help.

Ok so i ordered some parts, i ordered two phosban reactors for up to 100 gallons. I also went ahead and got two mag 12s, and lastly i bought light 2 of 3 400 watt metal halides. Today i will be ordering the glass baffles for my sump and the fuge wall. Melev the measurments i was thinking about going with height wise are 9 and 12 inch for fuge wall. will this be okay?

Just to clarify, he did not get two "Phosban" brand reactors. He got two really nice Nextreef media reactors for GFO and Carbon. Really nice!
