thoughts on a tall tank

Hey everyone! I was wondering what you guys would think about a 110 g tall tank, 48"x18"x30". What kind of lights should i get and will that but a limit on the kinds of corals i can keep? Also im guessing that the taller tank would make it hard to aquascape. If you have any experience with tall tanks or tanks of similar dimensions please share your experience!
 
I had a 110. The height does play a big part in aquascaping as in it sucks. But I loved my tank. It started looking really good before the crash. Seam sprung a big leak. I had radions over it for a while and those worked really well. But when I got the Hamilton tech Cebu sun with radiums that's when it really took off. I had sps growing on the bottom. It is possible. For a really good 110 look up, I think this is right, psteeleb. I think that's his name. He has/had a 110 that was amazing. Lots of ideas there.
 
I had a basic 180g that was 24" deep and 24" thick. I like the extra space to scape, but even 24" is deeper than I like.

I've built a 4'x2'x14" shallow reef tank and it's way more fun to 'play' in.

So when my 180g sprang a leak I replaced it with a CADlight 125g tank, 5'x2'x20". I like the 20" deep better than the 24" deep.

Do u have a FTS?
 
I have a love:hate relationship with my 30" tall tank. I love the extra height for swimming and SPS growth, but it's a major pain to reach the bottom, and I have long arms. The rear bottom might as well be on Mars. Fortunately I look at the tank far more than I need to reach the bottom. I light mine with Kessil WE mainly, and it seems to have no problems punching down to the bottom; maybe not for SPS or the high light clams, but certainly LPS, softies and the sand dwelling clams are fine.

If you do go 30" tall, get some good tongs.
 
I'm not a fan of tall tanks myself and I prefer about 16-18 inches in height. If I can't reach the bottom with my hands or I need a stool, then it's too high for me. :lmao:
 
I have this exact size tank. I really like the extra depth. I was able to create an absolutely monstrous rockscape and still have plenty of free swimming room above it. I do have to use my barbecue tongs to get anything off the bottom of the tank. And a 4ft ladder to get my shoulders above the rim to work. Totally worth it though.

I run 2 kessil a360we over mine. This stuff in mid tank and up is perfectly happy. The little bit of GSP I have on a rock at the bottom is slowly dying off.

My goals for this tank is to have mainly euphyllia and zoanthids. Possibly some other LPS like elegance, acans and brain corals. Down the road i might add in some SPS...
 
As and addendum to my last post, my next tank will still be 30" tall, but I do want the 24" front to back depth on the next one.
 
This pic is a little old. I was fighting an algae and low alk issue. I'll try to get a new pic tonight.

Here's a pic of it when it was starting to get nice. I can't find a pic right now of it before the crash.

 
I have the exact same tank. I went with the 110g tall because the space I had for the tank was limited in length and I didn't want it too wide to where it stuck out in our living room. I didn't mind a little extra height (Actually looks good for viewing purposes, and several fish use the extra open room up top for swimming.) I don't really have to do much maintenance-wise on the bottom of the tank and I have a small step stool so it's not bad at all, IME. I have 2 Hydra 26 HDs lighting it (Mounted lengthwise, centered on each side of the tank.) Here's a fairly recent shot:

You have an amazing tank. I wish I would have seen this when I was redoing my 110. A+ sir!
 
I'm currently in the building phase of a 240 gallon that is 54" W x 30" H x 30" D. There is a lot of potential for aquascape with the height and depth. I'm pretty sure the initial scape is going to be a pain in the rear but once everything settles in it shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. Has another poster mentioned long tongs and vet type cloves (that go up to shoulders) for fragging or some of the larger maintenance chores.

I tend to keep my hands out of the tank has much has possible so outside the initial rock and coral placement I think it should work out. Time will tell I guess but that is how I see it anyway.
 
I have a 220 that's 72Lx24Dx30T and honestly I wish it was 24 inches instead of 30 because it's tough get to the bottom.
