Thru my window

I am going to start a thread where I will be posting some of my bird photography as captured thru my window. Some of you that know what I do don't need an explanation how I get these images. If you are interested, please ask and I'll tell you what I know.

Just a brief kickoff with my equipment list...

My camera is a Nikon D7000
The lenses I usually use for this project are, Tamron 18-270mm. Nikkor 105mm Micro and Nikkor 35mm f1.8
Tripod and remote shutter release.

I us Adobe Photoshop elements 9 to do cropping and lighting touch up.

This is a shot of my "set"

Ive had it set up about 24 hours and have been already receiving some nice, diverse activity. I spent a good amount of time searching my woods for some pretty, mossy branches for perching. Thismorning it sounded like a jackhammer pounding on my house. When I looked I discovered a large male Hairy Woodpecker ripping these beautiful branches to smithereens! I'll need to find some new sticks soon

Heres the first fruits. This is from about 20 minutes behind the lens

I think this young male is going to offer up some good shots this fall/winter. he guarded the seed with authority, fully aware of my presence.

Off to an awesome start Jay! I like the inquisitive expression of the cocked blue jay head, and the "all business" look of the cardinal. I didn't know their lower beaks were so squared off.

I enjoy seeing the filaments of the feathers. As someone mentioned in another thread, the moss on the branches definitely adds color and texture to final photo. It is a lot of green though with the green grass below it.

Good point. It is seasonal tho :) Theres actually a nice aspen grove in the BG. As it colors up in the next couple weeks it could provide a nice pastel Bokeh. I'll lower my angle of view to direct me lens more onto the grove and post the results.

Sounds delightful! Mmm, pastel bokeh... :)

Thanks guys. The photo ops are there every day, all day. The thing I look for is good lighting. This thing is on the east side of my house. Any time you are shooting from inside out, light can be problematic. Light overcast days are ideal and the shooting is over by early to mid afternoon. The stormier days add a nice element with wind ruffling feathers, snowflakes falling, wet feathers, etc... Bright sunlight is usually bad.

A couple problems I deal with are bullies and squatters. White breasted nuthatches tend to be terrible bullies. Mourning doves will just sit in the middle of the seed tray, "squatters" Sometimes I'll stick my hand thru the blind and scare those guys off.

Also, I plan to copy your feeder-on-window-with-branch idea. It looks nice.

Cool! If you design it right, you don't need to drill hole are anything to mount it. Mine has a slot I made on the table saw that hangs on the rim of the storm window frame. It also has 2 triangle shaped corbels so the whole tray can handle a decent amount of weight. Last year I had a turkey that kept flying up onto it. He broke all the branches, but the feeder held him.

Wow, these are simply amazing. I'll be following this for sure! Will you continue to shoot through the fall and winter?

Thanks Adrienne. I absolutely will. Winter is really my target season for this set up. My only contingency is my home here is for sale, we are moving back to Oregon (currently in Wisconsin). So that will put an end to this project here. But until then, I will continue to work it :)

Heres some examples from last winter...

Great shots Jaybird! I just moved and have woods backing onto the rear of my new place, I hope to be contributing to this thread in the very near future, complete with shots of my set-up.

Love the nuthatches.

Jordan I look forward to your contribution and the subjects you capture. Where are you?

the conditions have been less than ideal the past two days. Heres one from today...

The bully abides, guarding his keep

Great shot! Is that birch or aspen in the background by chance?

I'm in London, Ontario. Fall is really accelerating here now. Finally got a good, legitimate frost on the weekend.

Theyre aspens. You are in a very similar migration belt as I am. I'll be interested to see your winter residents.

Im excited for someone with ample camera experience to do a set up like this so I can learn about your experiences and improve on what I'm doing. I would love for this to be an open discussion with hopefully some fresh ideas. I may be pruning some maples with hot fall colored leaves to use as perches in the next few days, to see how that effects the scene.
