Thru my window

Theyre aspens. You are in a very similar migration belt as I am. I'll be interested to see your winter residents.

Im excited for someone with ample camera experience to do a set up like this so I can learn about your experiences and improve on what I'm doing. I would love for this to be an open discussion with hopefully some fresh ideas. I may be pruning some maples with hot fall colored leaves to use as perches in the next few days, to see how that effects the scene.

Yes, I think I'll have very similar birds. I've been in the new place for two weeks and haven't had much time to sit around and watch the birds, or try photos for that matter, but I've seen plenty of cardinals, blue jays, nuthatches, Carolina wrens, kinglets, woodpeckers, a few different hawks, as well as some migrant wood warblers and vireos, just when glancing out the window. Also had a pair of eastern phoebes around for two or three days. There is a large flock of waxwings that have been camped out for a week in my neighbours large mountain ash and they are gorging on the berries. So lots of birds!

In addition to turning colors, you should try some berry perches, or even some type of evergreen pine. Pine or cedar would look especially good with your cardinals!

Not overly thrilled with the new perch. While it has nice colors, theres too many leaves and the birds are rarely landing on it. And when they do they are sometimes veiled in the leaves. I may prune it or I may just do something else. Maybe a much longer branch with the leaves in the background only??

I do have a berry tree as Jordan suggested. I may try that. I have also done the evergreen branches before and they look great, especially with snow. I'll definitely be doing that!

The chickadees are like my lab rats. I can always count on them to pose.

The colour is nice! The second shot is great, the first could be with the foreground leaves removed. Maybe try pruning them a bit heavier?

Beautiful as usual, but I have to smite you for posting pictures that include snow in them, as it is way too early for that nonsense!

The female is here often. She's pretty average (sorry ladies) so I rarely shoot her. But what the hey. The snow added a nice element to the scene, so here she is...

At first I was irritated by the oof branch in the foreground. but the more I looked the more it gives the scene a more "in the wild" feel to my eyes.

The light was pretty poor this day so its a bit contrasty.

The pine siskins, gold finches and red polls have been making a presence. I hope to get some more interesting images soon. I may have strap a suet to the feeder as there are several year round woodpeckers here.

It's funny, for about a month straight this summer I tried getting shots of a beautiful male Cardinal in my yard, but wound up getting mostly the female because she stuck around long enough.

I was going to add a shot of a large Swainson's Hawk last week, as it was sitting on top of the light pole just outside of my house, but by the time I ran in and grabbed the camera, my damn neighbor had scared it off. Literally, right as I turned the camera on.

Nice cardinal! The snow does add to the overall scene, I like them.

We've joined you in the snow club. I set up my feeders at my new place this weekend, now just waiting for the birds to find them. With the cold, wind, and snow, no avian takers yet, but of course the squirrels were there in a heartbeat, they decimated my suet feeder in a day so I'm going to have to rethink my suet strategy. :angryfire: Now I just need to set up my blind and finalize some perches, and wait for the birds.

I havent done any shooting on this set since I last posted here. I havent been diligent in keeping the feeder full either. I'll try to improve on that now that Im getting a little more time. Heres a contribution to this thread because these guys actually are photographed thru my window. My picture window upstairs. These guys bail if I try to walk outside so a shot thru the window was my only option. They perch in this tree and snack on the berries on the very coldest day. It was -26 in this shot. Theres three of them and I believe theyre roughed grouse

Wow, very nice! You should see about setting up a blind if you have one, maybe allow you to get closer undetected for some more shots.

Its been cold here but I've been trying to keep the feeders stocked, I think the birds appreciate it especially in the bitter cold... I went out in -22 degrees Celcius this morning to feel up my various feeders, the pine siskins were especially happy, they were sitting in the tree above me chittering and squeaking with excitement as I filled the nyjer feeder.

i'm lovin' these pictures!!!

jay, what about hummies? surely you get lots of them in the summer months. any pics?

That is way friggin cool Nina! That video looked like a swarm of bees! Holy bajeebers!

I'll work on putting together some of my best hummy pics ;)

PS I never did photograph a red head during my 3+ years here in the upper midwest. It was a bucket list bird and I just missed it. :( That and a scarlet tanager

for every hummie you see, there were 10 out of camera range. i have tried to count them but it's impossible. i have had a few over the years with bands, no idea where they came from. the video was taken when i had all of the feeders down to clean/refill them. i put 10 feeders out and fill them twice a day for most of the summer. i buy sugar (and grape jelly) throughout the year so i have a stash. LOL

i've only had one scarlet tanager here and it was years ago. have lots of flocks of cedar waxwings. i have quite a few red headed woodpeckers. many times, i see young ones that don't have their coloring yet. it's fun to watch them being fed by the parents.

another bird i had for a while was a tree swallow pair that nested in one of my bluebird nest boxes. they are awesome birds and their nests are really cool. i knew they liked to use white feathers so when i saw them checking out the box, i went to a craft store and bought a package of them, spread them around on the ground and she used them to line the nest. :)

looking forward to some pics of your hummingbirds!!

.

Hey Jordan. I would love to get some clean shots of these guys, but an outdoor blind in -15 isnt terribly appealing. LOL :eek2:

Here ya go Nina

Ruby throated wing stretch. I love when they do this!
