Two problems with your experiment. The TDF was cut two days earlier and is bigger. The control for this experiment is skewed from the start.

Anyway, it will still be fun to watch.

I don't think the TDF was cut two days ago! I got it two days ago at the max show in OC maybe they cut it a day before the show I don't know ! but I cut the RP on Saturday I don't think a day or two and size will create a problem on the way they grow or color !
Anyways we will find out in couple of months:confused:

Cool. Following along. Have both in my tank right now too but still small. Do noticed a small difference but not much. Hopefully will be more noticeable when they get bigger.

What kind of lighting are you running? Just asking for comparison purpose. I have mine in a 24" cube under 2 Kessils 360.

Agreed with raider, I also have both. Granted my RP is 20x larger than my tdf frag, which I've had for 1 year and minimal growth. But the tdf is bright pink w green, and RP is deep red with green.

This pops up all the time. IMO the TDF is a larger branch Acro. It's thicker and has more rounded coralites then a Red Planet. Plus the TDF has a hint of blue in the base. The RP is Green and beautiful red

Do you have both acros in your tank ?
Do you have any pictures?
pictures and facts will help not just personal opinions!

THAT'S WHY IT POPS ALL THE TIME BECAUSE WE CAN JUST GET THE RIGHT ANSWER :deadhorse1:

I'm trying to found out why will cost you 10x than the other and see if people can see the different whit out you telling them to look closer .
When I pay that much for a frag I want to be able to notice it from my other coral across the room:)

I paid $20 for my RP and $33 for my TDF...not a huge price difference anymore as both are good growers.

Any pictures

Red planet $20 it's about right but TDF for $33!!!!
Where did you get from?
I can't get a frag chipper than $100 !!:(
Can you get more frags for the price ?

$33 for a TDF? Where? Really random price at $33, but a steal if it's the real TDF. Doesn't matter to me though as I can't tell the difference and already have RP, a tried and tested beauty.

Please keep the thread updated for as long as possible. Very interested and following along for sure. Thanks for starting this thread.

My take--

There are two different versions of the TDF that people claim to be the original. One looks like a Red planet the other does not, and the difference is very easy to tell by corallite structure and colors.

So if you get a so called lineaged TDF and grow it next to a red Planet and have the one that already looks like a red planet..........let's call it Version One......it proves nothing other than you have the one that looks like a Red Planet.

I have no idea which version of TDF is the original, but I prefer the one that doesn't look like a Red planet. It has a pastel green skin"¦"¦"¦.also has pink, red, blue/purple and sometimes some white in the skin. I'll call that Version Two.

This is Version Two pics that I keep in my database---

The last pick is Slojmns colony the other two pics are referenced.

Thanks for your post Ed. The pic of Alicia's TDF is the best I've seen so far. There is a thread on the other forum about the TDF. Your thoughts on this coral makes sense...Many look like the Red Planet variant...and consequently some people say it is almost a Red Planet. However Alicia's photo clearly shows that once grown, it does look different to the RP, both in colour and structure.

Alicia's coral looks as close to the reference photo as one could hope to get. :)

So, that's what a TDF really looks like! Definitely different color and corallite structure. I'm guess I've only ever seen version 1 from people selling it as TDF. Gorgeous acro, but I still prefer the RP deep red color. Thanks Big E, pretty much set the record straight for me.

The original tdf is a different acro than the rp, plain and simple. There should be no argument there. I can see how people may think they are the same by the colors but the structures are different and it's easy to see

Those nice reference pictures are from Windy City Reefs which has shut down. They are local in my area. They have one of the biggest colonies that I have seen so far. I have had 3 frags and they have not grown much in 8 months. Just spreading out on the base. One is from Adam at Battle Corals and the others are from Jason Fox. I do also have a red planet that is basically a colony. The two are totally different to my eyes. Growth pattern is flatter on TDF, RP is branchier, colors on RP are red and green base, but the TDF has a pink with greenish pastel base. TDF for me is a slow grower, kinda like the purple monster or Oregon Tort. I believe we do not see many colonies because they are such slow growers.
