Toofrigginswt's Custom 125 Gallon Tank Build

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm so anxious to fill this thing up with water.

Glenn, yes sir... I'm glad I listened to you. The stand really did exceed my expectations. I think Paul decided to use the same white and black color code on all of his stands in case he needed to repair one. I think he said something like there are 35 or so shades of white when powder coating.

I ended up with the skimmer I had because the reviews were pretty good and the cone one you recommended wouldn't have fit into the first chamber of the sump.

You could have gotten the xp space saver cone such as the reef octopus xp-2000sss. The pump is inside the skimmer not outside.

Yep I was looking at the xp-2000sss model too. I ALMOST purchased that instead but I think at the last minute I decided against it because I think it would be easier for me to maintain/clean the pump if it was outside. Plus the version I bought had really good reviews and it was $150 cheaper than the xp-2000sss. I decided to save money there and put my $150 saved towards my other equipment.

Just got my plywood and foam cut..

So long story short... I had to reach out to the skimmer's manufacturer (Coral Vue) because the website I bought it from wouldn't take care of me and pretty much stated that I broke it! What awesome customer service huh? I've never used it so how can it be user error???? I will never buy anything from them again because this whole shipment has been a big headache and an inconvenience. There were more issues, not just a broken elbow on the skimmer that will steer me away from doing business with them ever again. I refrained from stating the name of the website only because I don't know what the rules are when discussing that kind of stuff.

Anyways, Coral Vue's customer service was great. I reached out to their director of sales and he took care of me right away. They are sending me a brand new body as a replacement. Sorry for the public venting ....

Glad your getting it replaced.
Look on the Vendor's Forum's and also in Buyer feed back.
That's why they are there so we can warn other's about bad service.
The way I look at it the company should of contacted the shipper and put in a claim the shipper most likely would of covered it.

Please let us know who you ordered that through just so we can all stay away from them in the future, or if you don't want to post for everyone to see just drop me a pm. I don't get these companies... Over a broken skimmer, which doesn't cost them that much to begin with, they have now list your service and mine now, you think these companies would think about that sort of thing.

I've dealt with 3 bubble blaster 5000 and 1 bubble blaster 3000 pump and a reef octopus xp-5000 skimmer cup with coralvue before. They will take care of your problem easily. Any reef octopus issue after purchase is supposed to be handled by coralvue, not where it was purchased.

FYI, The bubble blaster had reliability issues when they first came out with the first generation pump. There was rubber and other materials in the impeller that grinded the motor housing. The newer pumps are very reliable and the bubbles are awesome.

Coralvue's service so far has been great. I am confident that they will take care of me through the warranty period. The only thing that I slightly disagree with you on is that any Reef Octopus issue is supposed to be handled by Coralvue. I agree with that statement if its after the return period. But not two days after I receive it in the mail. If its within the return window, it should be taken care of by the seller. Amazon, Wal-Mart, marine depot, BRS, etc... They aren't going to tell you to call the manufacturer if they shipped you a defective product. They will allow you to get a replacement or refund if its within the return window. They will deal with the manufacturer themselves. It would be unprofessional for them to "blame" that you broke it. Anyways, let's move on. Coralvue is taking care of it. I'll post a review of the vendor in the correct forum. They will definitely see it because they post on reefcentral and others in Sacramento have posted reviews about them already. Back to the build thread

Yeah, the vendor blaming you is uncalled for that is why it is good that you have Coralvue to back you up. You don't have to deal with the vendor.

Looks very nice! have you thought of a secondary catch to put the sump
into just in case a check valve fails or a back syphon of some sort happens
when the power go's off?

believe me hardwood floors do not like saltwater on them for several hours &
a plexy glass one about 4" height and built into the bottom of your stand (framed inside) so you sump sits inside of it still looks nice and makes you feel a little better.

Regards
Tom

I have never thought about a secondary catch. Thanks for suggesting it! I will definitely plan on putting one in. My design initially only had check valves in it and I would need to perform a power failure drill just to see how much the sump fills up in case the power goes out. The catch pan saves me the trouble of needing to do that test. I really like your idea and agree that it would still look very nice. Would you still suggest that I drill a small hole on my returns near the teeth of the overflow to catch air in case of a back siphon?

Thanks
Jonathan

I was looking through you pics and Johns Stands really stands out in the background, Also those blue & red Vans you are wearing I was the first to purchase those in sacramento in 1981!!and Graduated with them wearing my robe from high school pics and all,no bull - Vans had a distributor shop on Del Paso Blvd & those just came out for skateboarders, I raced BMX and introduced them to BMX & a rival Stu Thompson & myself were the only ones who had the Red,White & Blue Vans, they cost 15.00 dollars in 81.
