Top 10 Nano Reef FIsh

A 5 or 6 gallon could work for a single occy or perc. Not saying it's recommended but totm have won w/that size and a clown it. I doubt it would've been nominated if it wasn't acceptable :)

Okay, thanks. I was thinking of getting one for a ~10 gallon tank and I went over to Live Aquaria and saw that they recommended a 20 gallon. Then I come here and pople have them in 5-6 gallon tanks.

I loved my "standard" firefish. I had "him" for over 2 1/2 years with no problems, until last week....

The firefish jumped from my Aquapod, and I didn't realize it had done this, and I walked over to the tank and stepped on it! :sad1: It was horrible. Especially because it was my stepping on it that caused its death. I'm still upset about it. I have no reason to think that the firefish wouldn't have been with me for another two years if it hadn't been for this incident....
 
My favorite nano fish is the Sixline Wrasse.

Of course wrasses may be one of the major reasons I push up and out of the nano's so its my consolation prize until I have the space.

OMG Elysia--that's absolutely horrible...do you have an open top or did you have the lid open for maintenance or something? I've had mine for a week now and he's cool...
 
So sorry to hear about your firefish Elysia.

Korrine your yasha's look amazing! Can't wait til I get a yasha for my Solana! I've been wanting one for over a year now.
 
Thanks guys. I feel guilty as hell. The firefish was the second saltwater fish I ever bought. The tank is a 24 gallon Aquapod w/ compact fluorescents, and pretty much from day one I have kept the "feeding door" open on the top to help vent off some of the warm air generated by the lights. That, along with adding fans to the hood, helps to keep the tank at a comfortable temperature IMO (although I probably run my tanks a bit cooler than most who keep SPS corals.) The firefish had lived in this environment since I first purchased it, but I guess in all wild things, past behavior is not really any guarantee of future behavior.

I still think that firefish are great nano fish, in particular because it isn't often that one sets up a larger tank with completely peaceful fish that the firefish would feel comfortable -- and they are nervous fish. I will definately purchase another one; I just need to re-think everything and figure out how to best accomodate my future firefish's needs....

Since they get up to 5" two of them would be cramped in the 10-gal. It would be alright at first but once they each hit 3" you probably should move them to something larger.

Ouch. That must really hurt especially after having him for so long.
Could always get another and just cover that vent hole with some small window mesh or something. Just something to let air pass through but keep the fish in.
I made a DIY mesh lid for my Solana to keep my purple firefish in.

They are great nano fish - especially for beginners. Once in a peaceful setup they are out all the time and are super fun to watch dart around the tank.

Oh and I definitely agree on the Yasha Goby. I want one so bad.. need to find one locally soon after my 2 Occ clowns are out of QT.
 
I agree about Tomatos and actually probaby the only types I would put in a nano that size would be ocellaris or Percula--most of the other species get too big and nasty...mine used to gite my hand in a 120 whenever i put it in there, can't imagine anything smaller
