Toronto LFS tanks poisoned

I would post a link to the article, but I dont think its aloud. I just read an article about a Toronto area store that lost 700 fish and 200 corals caused by someone dumping bleach in their tanks. By the time store employees noticed the smell it was too late. Police are investigating but there are no witnesses or security cameras in the store. It goes to show that there are some very sick people out there. If police are taking this seriously, they will have there hands full. You never know who it could be...a competitor, disgruntled employee, upset customer, activist...possibilities are endless. When you look at the hard work people within this hobby do to frag our corals and breed any type of fish possible to help save the reefs, this is a major loss. Its a major loss no matter how you look at it. Best wishes to the store's ability to recover from this.

If the person responsible is reading this: I hope you feel guilty enough to turn yourself in to police. You should be ashamed of yourself. You are one sick individual and you should have your hands cut off to prevent you from causing harm to any other animals/creatures/people again. Lucky for you this is North America, and although you are a low life dirt bag, you are protected by law because you have rights. You make me sick. I hope you never sleep another peaceful night again.

Man that's sick and sad. I don't understand what's wrong with people today. If they catch the sucker they should force him/her partake of gallon of bleach.

Yea that's pathetic. I don't think it'd be an activist since their basically killing what they're trying to promote protection of. Could have even been just a few punks. I'm more likely to go with disgruntled ex-employee though....

Sick, But could be worse he could have hurt people, Or used something even worse like Copper to kill everything. Hope they catch the Bastard and give him what he deserves.

This store was had only been open for around 5 months. There are other marine stores in the area. I would imagine police will be taking a good look them as well.

I have only been in this hobby for 1 1/2 years and I have had great experiences with people. It seems everyone is willing to help everyone else. There is a great comradary in this hobby, more than any other I have ever been apart of. I think that is what ****es me off the most.

Must be alot of bleach to start to smell something in all that water. was there a break in after hours? Can't image an employee not see a person bring in a bottle of bleach. Sad to hear about all the living creatures that died. Hopefully the store has insurance that can cover this.

Unfortunately it's all too easy to do something like that, it doesn't take much bleach to do that damage :( Usually such things IME are from disgruntled current or former employees, occasionally just plain idiots that think it's a "fun" idea, and sometimes (rarely) the competition.

The Indoor Jungle was the name of the store, and it was doing quite well. They had the largest display in all of the city and were getting bigger. They are shutting down for 1 month to empty all the tanks and do a through cleaning. I imagine they will be putting up cameras as well.

This was not the first time something like this happened in the area, one other store was sabotaged several years back.

Re: Toronto LFS tanks poisoned

OMG :-(
Who would DO such a thing?!
This is so, so terribly sad.

What is wrong with people? :-(

Ignorance breeds Ignorance! It is sad that someone could do so much harm. This happened to a LFS in Dunedin, Fl near me as well a few years ago. It was a disgruntled ex-employee or customer and it killed thier open coral display tank, the company could not recover and it closed its doors after years in business. Sad day and wish the LFS all the best.

indoor jungle is a great store, hopefully they can get everything back in order and continue to bring in the nice stuff they have been bringing in lately.

wow crazy i was just there a few weeks ago and was although not that impresed with the selection they are a brand new store and give it a year and this place could be the new mecca for saltwater. oakville reef gallery had a similar fate once, a competitor had poisioned their entire set up with copper!

Honestly, If I caught somebody in the act I would take it upon myself to open a can of whoop *** on!

Don't read into this but could it be an inssurance scam?

I know a few things about business and I can tell you that the #1 suspect in all of this is the owners of the company. Especially when they are young and inexperienced. This doesn't look good for for a young company. Don't be surprised if the fold. We already have too many Reef stores in the Greater Toronto area to make for a healthy micro economy in this industry.
I only buy from Oakville Reef Gallery and Reef Raft. I know what I get and hopeto keep those stores going as they bring in quality on every shipment.

Not to take the light off a terrible story, but did you guys read farther down the article?

The Ontario Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the case would not fall under animal cruelty because fish are non-vertebrates.

“According to the act, animal means a live, non-human vertebrate,” said Alison Cross, OSPCA spokesperson.

As unfortunate as it is, there are a few threads in GTA (Greater Toronto Area) aquarium forums outlining the concerns/opinions of the stores' aquarium system and fishkeeping husbandry/practises. I myself have been there quite a few times but have left empty handed and very disappointed.

I'll leave it at that.
