Treating with Vitamin C

Thanks Peter for elaborating on my post. You said basically what I wanted to say, but unfortunately ran out time this morning:D . I guess my question is: If different carbon sources result in different bacteria wouldn't it stand to reason that they would strip away different nutrients or at the very least differently? I have know idea but, I would think it would certainly be interesting to find out. Maybe not different nutrients maybe just at a different rate perhaps. I know that at this time of year I do see a little cyano crop on the sand which I attribute to the fact that temps go up slightly and usually I change my bulbs. I would love to be able to control -even it is minor outbreak. I know I can change bulbs at another time of year but I've been maintaining this schedule for so long that I just deal with it. I may have more nurients in the water at this time of year but, I don't experience it any other time. I've even gone as far as measuring phosphates daily before I change the bulbs and they remain the same as the rest of the year. Anyway my corals -color and growth have never been a problem for me so far. But it is fascinating at the least.

Puffy if I remember correctly you as well as some of the others said that you treated for cyano before starting VC and haven't had any since correct? I did try sugar a while back and it worked great except I got cyano after awhile. Which in turn had some of my Zao's close up but no melting. I slowly stop dosing sugar and the cyano went away and zao opened. So perhaps VC lowers your phosphates in some way? As sugar lowers you nitrates. Just a thought?

Just to clarify--I have never had a speck of cyano in either of the 2 main display tanks where zoas were melting. This was (& still is the case) in my 2 other "less important" tanks, which also are crowded with hair algae. I do treat these tanks with VC, 1x/day.

This may have been posted earlier in the thread, but has anyone used Vitamin C on a Prodibio tank? Can it be done? I started dosing Vitamin C last week and I'm getting the Prodibio tomorrow. Just want to see if it has been done.
tom

I have read thru the most recent spilt and have not seen this questioned answered. I too am running Prodibio and would like to know if it's ok to dose Vit-C.

I have purchased this since I can get locally.

With vitamin C you're probably just adding another carbon source in addition to the Bioptim. So, the dangers involved would probably be the same as overdosing any carbon source.

I would watch the additions of the VC with the BioOptim. I would either discontinue for a few days after the carbon dosing, or cut the biooptim in half and half the VC additions. On another thread, people are experimenting with different carbon sources to go with Biodigest, but these are all experiments, and should proceed with extreme care.

I have approx 130 gallons total water volume and only dose 1 vial of the optim and digest on alternating weekends. How much Vit-C would you reccommend dosing?
I just want my zoos and Paly's to pop. The Vit-C would not be used for any treatments, only for aesthetics.

Thank you,
Brock

Wow i only read through the first like 20 pages on the first thread and it looks cool. What i want to know is, how are you guys having so much trouble to begin with, with your zoos i mean. Ive got 4 different kinds or so and they all look great, open fine, and spread pretty good. When i make the move to a new 30g ill keep an eye out and maybe think about using this method to see if i can get more color out of my zoos (they already look good but i guess it would be worth a try)

Do all of you dose 50ppm like the link recommends? If not, how many ppm daily do you guys add to receive great results?

I'm adding 13 at the moment (2 weeks) and I see little improvement. 50ppm just seems like way too much.

I can only guess at how to go about it, but I would not use the VC for three days after the optim usage. then resume using VC. I would say that you might not have to use the full strength usage that others here are posting. Because you are using Probidio try using smaller amounts of vc, and see how it affects your zoos and palys.

Most I'be gone up to for healing melting zoas was 2 tsp, 2x/day) are you dosing twice?). That's around 4500mg on a 100g system or around 23ppm, I think. I dosed that for about 4 months, now I'm using 1 1/2 tsp.

Yea.. I think I will try using 1/2 of the VC recommended dosage.

I believe VC does way more than just act as a carbon source--that's just a bonus.

I agree but I am not sure what else it is doing. If it were simply a carbon source it would most likeley affect everything in the tank. i really have found it to affect mostly softies.

Oh, I am dosing Prodibio and vitamin C with success.
