Treating with Vitamin C

John, I'm interested to see the results.

BTW the pictures two threads ago, though they are certainly beautiful, I can say for almost 100% certain that they're due to the T5 lighting, not the VC, though VC may have made some slight changes. I don't mean to butt into your thread and turn it into a T5 vs MH debate, but I just see those brighter colors happen more under T5, less brown than before. It also depends on bulb choices as well, of course.

Following the thread though. Still interested in the VC dosing.

No, you do not want to have to open individual capsules.
Get this: http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=-7152293197697039798
Wish I had seen that product before I ordered the Calcium Ascorbate http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=474&at=0
Yours looks like a better deal and is more potent by volume as well.
The only thing I like better about the powder I ordered is the added calcium instead of sodium.

I also tried to order a second time to see if the coupon could be used over, and no it can't. It's only good on your first order.
Of course you could get around that by creating a new account with each order.

As for those coral photos, I immediately thought the same thing as ReefWreak.
I've seen corals dramatically change color when you change their lighting type.
I seriously doubt the VC had anything to do with that kind of color shift either.

The only way to really determine is to only change the VC dosing without changing any of the other parameters.
Even better would be to setup a control tank (non VC) and compare results to an exact test tank getting dosed.

I would be thrilled to find someone willing to experiment on this but alas, no one has offered.

Calcium/sodium/magnesium in these are too minimal to make any difference in your tank.

I've been dosing for about a week and I'm starting to see positive effects in my zo's. I'm also noticing a little more diatoms and my water seems a little yellow. The diatoms aren't a big deal, but I think I'm going to use some chemi pure or carbon for a day or so to clear up the water.

Yes, that is the correct product. I have always had diatoms & have needed to clean my glas every day. If you use carbon, do not use it near the time/place you are dosing the C or it will remove it. If you read this article, you will see the C should actually make your water look much "cleaner". Many folks have said that too.

(Disregard the chart in that article, we have revised it.)

Has anybody that has stopped using vitamin C had any of their problems come back yet?

Your tank is still young--it may just be a phase it is going thru & nothing to do with the VC. Give it a month of dosing & see what happens.

If after 2-4 weeks the zoas/palys look great and are growing like crazy, do you lower the ppm to 1300? Would you recommend keeping the level continually at 1300 ppm or stop dosing?

Something I just noticed today: My plain green fungia plate is getting huge all of a sudden--the green is much brighter & the boring, cream-colored stripes are turning purple!

I think you are talking about 1300 mg but without knowing the volume of your tank I dont know what the ppm is. I am dosing around 6-7 ppm and having excellent results. Turn back a few pages in this thread and find the chart with the dosing amounts.

BTW 6-7 ppm is 1 tsp (4400 mg) for my 220 gallon tank twice a day.

Engine 7- Thanks for the info. Our tanks are about the same. I've got about 300 total water volume. I saw this in another VC thread.

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC

Day 1 : concentration of 5 ppm

Day 2 : concentration of 15 ppm

Day 3 : concentration of 30 ppm

Day 4 : concentration of 50 ppm

After day 4, continue treating with a concentration of 50 ppm for 10 more days to 30 more days, depending on the severity of what you are treating for.

so for my water volume (~300 gallons) the schedule would be:

Day 1 : 5676mg

Day 2 : 17031mg

Day 3 : 34065mg

Day 4 : 56775mg

Then after ~2-4weeks maintain daily at ~12000mg (6000mg x2day)?

It is not necessary to turn off your skimmer. Although it is not recommended to use chemical-removing products, like carbon or Purigen. I have a very diverse, mixed reef & prefer to continue running Purigen. I dose after where I have the Purigen placed in my sump, in hopes that the VC has a chance to be absorbed into my coral's cells, before it's whisked away by the overflow.

I'm doing the same thing now Puffy. I just added Purigen along with carbon and Phosban to my sump. After I added my third mushroom leather that is 14" across I felt I needed it. I add the vitamin C after the media.
Whats up with your vacation?

That sounds about right. Back in some of the earlier pages of this very long thread there was some information about dosing for medicinal reasons or simply dosing for better color/growth. It was said that dosing around 5 ppm twice a day will maintain all of the good effects of the vitamin. 5 ppm twice a day for daily maintenance and up to 50 ppm twice a day for therapeutic (sp)dosing. I am dosing a little more then that because 1 level tsp is around 6-7 ppm twice a day because I am too lazy to knock a little of the vitamin out of the spoon ;)
