Triple-S Fish Ranch - 1700gal 164” x 48” x 56” SPS peninsula build

I own the aqua logic elecro 2kw inline titanium heater and it's hands down the finest heater on the market. The 2Kw is available in a 110 or 220 v model, with the 110 pulling higher amps. I went with the 110 with a dedicated breaker and I love it. The models above 2kw are all 220 which means special a/c outlets are needed and likely that means hiring an electrician. The heater has a temperature controller already built in, but you can still integrate it with an Apex. It also has a flow control switch so it will deactivate if the pump is turned off (eg, for feeding). That keeps the heater from over heating. Depending on what feed pump supplies the heater with water, you might need to plumb in a George Fisher wye check valve before the heater along with a partial bypass after the check valve so that you can regulate flow through the 1.5" in/outs, while making sure the titanium heating coil remains wet even when the feed pump is turned off. Pricing for this heater is best from aquarium specialty out of North Carolina. I bought mine 2 weeks ago from the owner (Scott) who is very reputable and ethical/trustworthy. Anyhow, this hearer is the best out there. Hope this helps.

I love those chairs and table sitting near the tank. I would spend a lot of time sitting there having a drink!

Very beautiful woodwork in that house. Love the marble around the house. Can't wait to see how the kessels work out. I've heard great things about them and the orpheks.

awesome build. everything looks unreal for a home reef. cant wait to see this running.
Thanks, Lilmatty5dimes!

Thank you, saltwatershark, good to know. I am still hoping I won't even need a heater but if I do this is definitely the one.

That's the idea, in 2017 or whenever it is that I actually finish this tank :-)

Thank you, biecacka. I'm running Ecoxotic 120W cannons, though, not the Kessels. I've heard nothing but good things about the Kessels, they just don't make anything powerful enough to punch through 54" of water.

Paul,

Looks like you've made a ton of progress! Looks great!
Thanks, Roni! Very happy to see it shaping up.

Is this the IS-36108-W skimmer from MRC?
This is the baby brother to the 36108, the 2492.

Ahh yes, my mistake I just seen the similarities in the body shape with a. Quick glance but I remember you mentioning it before. Sorry. Anyway I'm still curious to see how they work out! I'm sure with all the though that is gone into the tank they will be great. What diode setup do they have?

Corey

So I didnt see where you are going to install the full body climbing harness and pulleys above the tank that will suspend you head first into the tank for cleaning ???

December Update: cabinetry, fish room progress, beginning QT setup

December Update: cabinetry, fish room progress, beginning QT setup

Another slow month on the aquarium. Media room project dragged on and just wrapped up today, though I can't really use that as an excuse given that the fish room has been available for most of the last 4 weeks.

Since the last update:
  • Aquarium cabinetry completed
  • Light drivers installed
  • Quarantine tank racks installed
  • Coral QT delivered
  • Lab desk and base counter installed next to sink
  • Ordered plumbing, pumps, UV units for RO/DI and salt water reservoirs

On to the pictures. . .

Canopy Outer Doors
Cabinetry doors are just a facade in front of much thicker soundproofing doors.

Sound proofing doors open
Didn't end up with room for full 4" thick doors, but these should be enough to block the relatively quiet flow of 4500gph through a 1.5" full siphon plus three 2" dursos.

Thx as always for the update. I am really eager to see those cannons fired up. Are they too blue? Will they be too focused on one spot? Can't wait to see them in action!

Really like that wood work by the way what kind of wood is that!? How many cannons are you using? Also what "night light" are you using because I think those cannons only provide day light! Keeps the updates coming!

I'm glad you requested. I'd been waiting to fire them up until I had the dimmer control from the Apex configured. Based on the 100W canons I was expecting the mix to be far too blue until I dimmed the blues down to 50% or less. But there seems to be a different balance on the 120s. The look is really quite nice even without dimming, very similar to overdriven Radiums. There doesn't appear to be any spotlighting or rainbows even on the top of the spires, though the real test will be when there are fish swimming around. To get a sense for just how wide the spread is on the canons, look at the floor in front of the aquarium. The light you see on the tile is all from the canons, not the room lights.

Here are a few shots with the lights on, both blue and white on 100%. These came out slightly more blue in the pictures than in person.

Thank you, h.cordero! The wood is mahogany. There are 12 canons. I don't plan to run true night lights, but for early morning and evening I will dim the lights down to low output.

Those sound proofing doors are a great idea, and well executed. I so love following this build! Great work.

Thank you, HumphreyBear! I have my fingers crossed that the canopy doors will be sufficiently sound proof. The main media room windows performed even better than anticipated and so far I'm able to get into the low 20s dBA with the equipment off. Here's hoping the aquarium doesn't raise the noise floor in the room.

Impressed.
Thank you, jimmy n.
