True vs false

Other than spines and black line thickness how can you tell the difference. I cant get tehm to hold still long enough to count. LFS sold as ocellaris, but I think they mgith be true perc. I think i countered 10 spines. Brooklynella treatment going well also.

likely percula,

A. you counted more than 9 spines
B. the orange in the eye.

can you get a picture?

ocellaris also have less prominent facial features. true percs have a gently sloped nose with lips that kinda poke out more, the ocellaris have a more rounded nose. true percs have more black edging to their stripes while ocellaris have very little. the orange on ocellaris is more like someone colored them with a crayon, it is usually a bright orange, and with age there backs start to turn brownish. true perculas are a deeper darker orange.

i really dont know why it is so hard for people to tell the difference between the two, its not that hard at all to tell you the truth. not to sound rude.

For those of us just getting our first clowns its harder than you think. It really doesnt matter to me which I have, I just want to know.

The most prominent detail I have found is the black around the white stripes is thicker on the Perculas. But sometimes it is hard to tell due to the breeding of clowns in captivity have given us some very bizarre and wonderful color combinations.
Ask your LFS owner if he orders from ORA. If so then your confidence on what type of clown this is should be 100% as ORA stands by what they sell and I have never had a problem with them mis-labeling.
:D

Look at the eyes.

What is my fish? I consider it an Ocellaris, but based on this info, it has percula eyes. Sorry for the bad pic. I will try to get a better one later today.

:) Does it really matter that much? They are YOUR pet, that's most important.

of course to a collection freak like myself, yeah I go crazy sometimes too.

PLUS, with all the tank raise available these days, spine test is not accurate anymore. I actually have a whole tank of percellaris (parents are percula x ocellaris), making things worst. ^_^ For most part the ocellaris genes are more dominant if anybody cares.

elegance coral's fish looks 90% ocellaris to me. Look at the black outline of the center bar. It's almost too thin to see.

You really have to look for a small shiny orange line that wraps around the pupil. Some ocellaris clowns will have a slightly orange iris but wont have that distinct orange small circle. Sometimes they look so similar thats really the only way I can tell. If it gets down to that you really can only tell by seeing them verses looking at a picture. Oh well its really no big deal. Both species are great fish to have.

dont look at the black and white lines they are the worst way to Identify look at the eyes.

look at the face. check spines. there are only a few color patterns that are distinctive enough and those confuse people daily.
