Tunze DOC Skimmers

I'm surprised the Tunze DOC skimmers don't get more attention than they do. I have been running a 9010 for a little over a week now, and it works great. The extremely small footprint allows me to keep it in the limited space of my sump, and the thing started pulling copious amounts of skimmate right away. I'm dumping the cup daily. The unit does seem to prefer to skim wet, as opposed to other skimmers I have had. I am not sure if large amounts of wet skimmate is better or worse than smaller quantities of thick smelly stuf, but I'm pleased. Score another for Tunze. Between the Osmolator and the Streams, I'm not surprised how well the skimmer works too.

My thoughts exactly !!!
The Tunze DOC skimmers are very underrated . I dont think that people looking to buy a skimmer consider these seriously because they are small and reasonably priced. I have had other so-called "high performance" skimmers and my 9010 kicks butt! They are so small and SILENT that I am amazed at how much skimmate its able to pull out consistantly.
My 9010 is sitting in my 5.5 gallon sump along with 2 submersed pumps (TUNZE !), heater, filter sock & return plumbing, probes, and misc plumbing to run a phosban reactor. The 9010 fits perfectly! I couldnt possibly fit any other "high Performance" skimmer in there, and I am lucky because I dont want any other skimmer . I am happy.

Dont buy into the "high Performance" big, loud, mega-$$$ skimmer hype!!! Get a TUNZE DOC Skimmer. Plug and Play......set it and forget it, and it will STILL skim unlike most other skimmers that need constant adjustments! Drain the cup every couple of days and the air venturi system gets cleaned automatically too.
Thats it!!

Hello,

I completely agree with all that was said. I love my DOC 9010 skimmer. It's like a secret or something. I guess they're pretty new still. I'm glad I made the jump. No regrets. Compact, quiet, and pulls out a lot of stuff consistently. Love the fact that the cup and reaction tube are one piece and so easy to clean. I actually enjoy cleaning it! I think that is the key to consistency. Did I mention energy efficient at 21 watts, and reasonably priced. What more can one ask for. A well designed product.

doc skimmers are great. i love the fact they are gentle on plankton. mine ( used to not using it now as i am still seetin g up new tank) pull out the darkest foam youv ever seen

Any of you guys have skimmate shots of your doc skimmers? I was thinking about buying the 9005 for my 55 gallon tank to put it the sump/fuge.
Thanks
Stewie

Here are a couple of shots of my 9010 in action.
Sorry they are in my gallery, but I dont know how to post pictures in posts yet.
I cleaned out the reaction chamber/cup the night before the pictures. My 9010 is running on my 38 gallon Oceanic with a 5.5 gallon sump. In a bigger tank it may produce even more skimmate! I am getting approx 100ml -200ml a day, so far. These skimmers are very consistant, as they usually just keep on skimming even after you have just cleaned out the cup.
I would say to just get the 9010. The 9005 is about the same $$$ AFTER you add in the "sump" kit (about $40.). BUT the 9010 is a much more powerful skimmer. I have had both 9005 and now a 9010 so I know the difference. The 9005 is "ok" but the 9010 kicks butt! Most would say it even out produces the 9015. It does like to skim wet though, which is ok in my book.
Best skimmer I have owned.......and I have owned some big $$$ skimmers .........cough ......deltec mce 600,.........cough,cough..... among others!
A great, trouble free skimmer that is VERY quiet, small and doesnt need to be fiddled with constantly to achieve the desired results. Reasonably priced compared to some other skimmers that are comparable in skimmate production. Did I mention that it was QUIET !
9010 all the way !

Thanks alrha......
How did you do that ????
I really should sit down some time and figure it out ! I know that there is some instructions somewhere, but if I remember it is geared towards photobucket.........which i dont use.

I am still trying to figure out how the 9015 still skims so well using the same motor as the 9010 ??? If the collection cup on my 9010 was as tall as the 9015.......I dont think it would skim??? Sometimes the foam head on the 9010 is bubbling inside the reaction chamber close to the top, but not into the cup. I cant imagine it with a cup that is twice as tall.. My air tap is usually wide open too.

Maybe Roger could answer why the 9015 can use the taller cup ??? There must be some other internal mods to make a 9015 produce more foam ???

same here, i always wonder if having a shorter chamber would allow me to get all that extra foam out that never makes it all the way to the top.

I gotta' get you some pics. My 9010 is still pulling stuff like crazy. I literally have to dump it every 48 hours. I'm incredibly happy with this skimmer.

thats a lot for 8 hrs (compared to mine - it would probably take mine a coupld of days to get that).
is that pretty much your average rate?

If you guys really want to rock--get the optional foam extractor (that's standard on the 9020) run the drain hose to a container and go on vacation!

I have pics in my gallery of my 9020. These skimmers are the best deal out there fore size, low electricity consumption, legendary Tunze quality, Plankton Friendly option, price and performance, constumer service, the list goes on!!!

nano skimmer by tunze

nano skimmer by tunze

very encouraging thread. i've been looking for a reason to go with tunze, you may have given it to me.

i plan on putting it in the sump portion of a small w/d filter. the nano seems to be a great fit, but will look into the 9010.

has any one got a nano by tunze? or heard how they work? i've seen only one review, but they love the nano.

So, in your opinion, the Tunze is skimming better than the 600. I have been looking at both for my new 65g. Dont figure on running my beckett. :) Plus the end cost for the 9010 is less.

Another question for you guys, as Rodger is gone. Is the 9015 just a larger reaction chamber & collection cup? Seems to be the same size pump & air capacity.

yup, everything is the same, just a bigger cup (of which the inside is the reaction chamber)

rdanamorton,
O.K.........here is the deal. The Deltec MCE 600 is a great skimmer.........and I would say, would probably out-perform the 9010/9015/9020. BUT..........Mine was VERY loud.......and the micro bubbles it produced was so bad.........I couldnt see in to the tank! I found that I had to constantly adjust the 600......seemed like I was tinkering with it every time I walked by the tank. It would overfill the "very small" collection cup with clear saltwater all the time if I didnt keep on top of the adjustments. In the end it was just too much trouble........I never got it to produce too much skimmate during the short time I owned it.........I think it was hyped up to much.

On the other hand.........My 9010 has been GREAT.........I just set it in my sump, and plugged it in. There is only 1 adjustment, the air intake for the venturi. It doesnt need constant attention..........it just skims and skims. I clean the collection cup every couple of days.....approx 300-500 ML is collected in a few days. It works for me. Oh yea.........did anyone mention that these skimmer are SILENT.........not just quiet.........SILENT! I dont think you can find a quieter skimmer........that was important to me. Also they take up very little room in the sump. I think its about 4.5" x 4.5" square x approx 16" high.

I think the MCE 600 is a great performing skimmer if you have the time to fiddle with it constantly. Its prob hyped up too much........a little overrated and WAY overpriced, although the quality of the 600 is second to none!
On the other hand the TUNZE 9000 DOC skimmers are a little underrated.......They dont get much attention for some reason ???? They just do there job QUIETLY in the backround and dont require much maintanance or adjustment at all. They are reasonably priced for the amount of skimmate they produce. These skimmers are not all hyped up YET........get one while you still can, because once the word gets out.........you WILL have trouble finding one! They are not that easy to find lately anyway.

Anyway, thats MY take on the comparison you wanted. I have had both, so I am speaking from personal experience.........not hearsay. Again.............just IMHO......anyone else agree, or have any input on this???
Hope this helped somewhat.........

herbie,

thanks for the run down.....i think there was some confusion. i was looking for feedback re the tunze 9002 nano skimmer. it's more my price and i only have 30 gal. fish, nems, and some soft coral. the 9010 sounds great but for only 30 gal the $300 or so seems pricey, to me anyway. especially if the 9002 will be adequate.

any thoughts?
