Tunze DOC Skimmers

I wasn't suctioning it down, I just put the suction cup on it. I appreciate the offer to fix it, but if I need to use it, I'll just superglue the posts back onto the plate.

Still going... 600ml of "Amber Boch" every 48 hours without fail. Never have I had this kind of consistency from a skimmer. I use the rails to mount.

Would I need the extension kit if I put the skimmer in my 10 gallon sump? ( 9010 model ) Anyone have a picture of how there's is set up in their sump? That would be very helpful.

Mine is in a sump chamber that holds a constant level of about 11 inches. I use the rails to hang it from the side, which keeps the water level about one-quarter inch below the wavey-sea water height mark on the skimmer. I'm assuming the "extension kit" provides more rails so you can drop the skimmer lower from the top edge of whatever you are hanging it from. May be way off with that one. Roger is the better here.

O.K. this should clear up some confusion...........

All that is included is a "solid" bottom plate to keep water inside the skimmer body, with suction cup mount base. An adapter for the intake grate to accept the 90 deg. and riser tube to bring the water up to the "wavy line". This keeps the water level constant in the skimmer body, no mater what the sump water level is .......4" to 11". It also comes with a sponge for the riser tube that helps to break up some of the microbubbles and give the water a "soft" way to get back to the sump.

My 9010 is in my 10 gallon sump.........works GREAT! My water level varies in sump from about 6"-8". Any where from 4"-11" and the Skimmer is very consistant........water level within the parameters is not important ,as the 90?? is self regulating with the extension kit. Only the air screw ever has to be adjusted.

A 10 gallon sump is 12" high.........so WITHOUT the extension kit, 11" of water must be maintained in the sump or it wont skim........period. If you ask me..........11" of sump water level in a 12" high 10 gallon sump is WAY to close for comfort!!!
My 9010 works perfectly in my 10 gallon sump........and the extention kit works as it is intended.........it is NOT a Piece of CR@P! It works GREAT. IMO a 90?? will not work in a 10 gallon sump unless the extension kit is used. The extension kit is included with the 9010,9015 and 9020. Only the 9005 does not come with it. Most would highly recommend the 9010 over the 9005, because of MUCH better performance for "almost" the same cost as the 9005 WITH the extention kit.
The 9010 is the BEST value in the DOC line-up........I think most others would agree???

I will see if I can post a picture of my 9010 in the 10 gallon sump "with" the extension kit in operation.

WHOA! there must deffinitely be something wrong with mine then!
i gotta buy a 9010 cup and see what happens. it would suck to find out i paid more to skim less.

Your killin me.............!

Alrha,

How about trying out a 9005 cup...........its like half the size of the 9010  .
I wonder if my 9010 would skim even better with the 9005 cup ??? :D
I had a 9005 and it doesnt come close to the performance of the 9010.........even with the stubby collection cup!

my skimming

my skimming

I do get a lot of skimmate but lately some factors have poped up. Firstly, finding that this skimmer reacts very very badly to Selcon, if you have it or use it you know what I mean. The skimmer basically shuts down for hours after using selcon with mysis. I am having a little troubled dialing in this screw, first 3 weeks I kept the screw out now its fluctuating like my old CSS needlwheel, in that it somedays overfills my collection cup, and other days works fine. I know Roger has been helping me but I am thinking I might need a new venturi system for this thing. I am getting a bit frustrated here.

Take care
David

here is what i got on my 200 gal system in 4 days. i have to clean the glass every other day. i took it apart and cleaned it and put it back together so many times and i cant figure out why it's not doing better.
the color is not really as dark at it shows in the photo, it is more of a green than a black.

I don't think the assesment of skimmate color and volume is valid across aquariums. The only way such a comparison would have any meaning is if the skimmers were used in the same tank or identical tanks. The skimmate will vary with what is in the aquarium to be skimmed.

David,

If you would like to send the skimmer in i am happy to look at it. I think we will find that it is a combination of many small installation problems and possibly some obstruction of the air passages. I don't think their is likely any major defect.

Roger

Hey thanks for the offer, I am going to take it apart this weekend, and clean the entire system with compressed air, and see if that helps. Otherwise its still pulling some nasty stuff from my tank. I have been away past cpl of days doing work, but over weekend I will fix it.

Hey Doug, they are delivered for use in tank or in sump, and include the parts for both installs. The 9005 is the only exception- the sump kit is an optional accessory.

I'm considering using a 9010 in a AGA 125 gal. How much space do I need inside my hood in order for the collection cup to fit and be able to remove it for cleaning?...in other words, how much space from the waterline to the top of the hood do I need?

Hi Rodger,
Thanks for the quick answer. :)

Maybe if I ask this a different way...........

On a 9010, what is the measurement from the wavy-sea water level mark to the top of the collection cup? ....and how much space is needed to lift the cup off the unit for cleaning?

Thanks!

I can't give you an exact measurement, but I would say it isn't over 7". However, you have to be able to pull the bubble chamber out too, since it's attached to the collection cup. I'll try to remember to measure tonight.

You would need 5" from the water line to the canopy. 8.5" are required from water line to remove the cup but I assume your canopy has a hinged top
