Tunze or Vortech

What would you do and why?

(2) Tunze 6105's with a 7095 Controller

(2) Mp40's

I've read reviews on both and both have phenomenal reviews, but which would you go for ... and why?

Do you need minimal footprint and heat in your tank? Vortech.

Do you need the quietest equipment possible? Tunze.

Both have excellent reviews, quality, support, and perfromance. I have zero noise tolerance and a silent tank, so Tunzes are a must since Vortechs are audible- not loud though- since the motor is external. If it was not for that, I would have a combo of the 2, since each has different flow qualities.

either is a good option, I went with tunze because i wouldn't be able to take the noise of the vortechs. quiet if turned down but whats the point if you can't use the powerhead to their full ability.

also go with a 7096 controller, cheaper than the 95 and should do the same options

I'm pretty sure it does the same thing too, just needs to be programmed with the computer first to get to the right settings.

But its not mac compatible from what I've read ... Windows only by the looks of things. Up to Vista ... not even sure if Windows 7 will work for it.

Dead silence is a key for me ... it sounds like the tunzes are the way to go.

Tunze would be the better chose if you are needing a silent power head... my MP40es is great but not silent...

I like to use short pulse mode so the mp40 was was loud winding up and down. Now I used two 6095s with apex and it's silent and I get waves just as good

If you have a reef controller, can you avoid the tunze controller all together?

Two 6105's and an apex will do the same thing as the two 6105's and the 7095 tunze controller??

For the price of the tunze controller it would be worth buying a really good reefkeeper for just a bit more, and get it running the lights and heaters too ...

Not the same thing as a tunze controller with an apex, but can give you substantial control over them. 99% of the programming I have ever done with a Tunze controller has been simple alternating between certian speeds, like 30%-100% alternating left to right every 30 seconds. Easily done with the APex, with much more flexibility in times. Apex lacks any type of random flow though, the 7096 provides that.

I have a MP40wes and a MP60wes on my 180 tank. Although there is a hum coming off the powerheads, I can hear the water going over my (2) corner overflows before i can hear the hum of the Vortechs. I love my Vortechs

Not trying to start a war here, but I can see paying that much for the MP40s. Yes I know they are great pumps...and you really do get what you pay for. However, I personally feel the Tunze pumps are just as good (though a little bigger).

Sorry... cant see paying that much for the MP40s

The price is very close I'm pretty sure. The MP40's have a mind blowing cost, and the 60's even scarier if thats what I might end up needing ... but the Tunze's are no slouch when it comes to price either.

It would be $1000 for 2 MP40's

It would be $914 for 2 Tunze 6105's with the 7095 controller

Tunze is quieter, and you can actually direct the flow where you want, and I could add additional units to the controller at a cost of $350 per unit. Where as it will be $500 for each added vortech.

who woulda thought powerheads could be such a tough decision lol.

I would keep your eyes open on the buy/sell forum for the Tunze 6105's and the 7095 controller. They will come up from time to time with very reasonable prices when somebody's breaking down a tank. I suspect you will be able to keep $400-$500 in your pocket that way.

both are well made and do well in the reef tank one sits outside and keeps the heat outside but has some noise ,the other is mounted inside the tank and is alot quieter both move water well..like them both

The Tunze 7096 software is absolutely Mac compatible. I'm running 10.6 Snow Leopard and the Mac 7096 download from the Tunze website works great.

FWIW, Roger (the US Tunze rep) has said that there is a new update for the 7096 software coming soon, for both Windows and Mac.

And thanks for that! Does it do the same as the 7095, just needs to be programmed from the computer?

This would save over $100 right off the top!

And if anyone knows first hand ... I'd like to know the difference between running a pair of powerheads, and running a wavebox.

They seem large and intrusive, yet still pretty popular.

Any thoughts?
