Tunze Recirculation Pump/Powerhead Silence 1073.020 performance issues

Wow,

Just swapped out my mag 5 for this pump. Stated performance for mag 5 is 475-500 gph @45 watts.

I thought I would try out the tunze pumps, and with stated performance of 634 gph @ 30W, I was going to tap off the discharge and run my carbon reactor.

Pumping height is approx 45”

End of the day, I don’t think the tunze pumps puts out near as much flow as the mag5. There go's that plan. I am happy with the pumps performance, it is indeed quiet, but must say, flow is a different issue. The mag5 is a stronger pump, flow wise.

Kind of threw a monkey wrench in my overall justification of purchasing this pump, to get rid of 2 pumps, and decrease my overall power consummation for the tank.

I will keep it, but wanted to table for discussion, and know if anyone else ran into this situation.

The 1073.020 has a sharp drop off due to head pressure. The Mag 5 is a higher head pressure pump. 1073.02 is only producing about 190gph at 5ft. Basically, at 0 head the 1073.02 has more flow but it has a sharper drop off due to head pressure.

Roger, can you tell me what the output is on the .02 with 3ft of head pressure? If it's too strong for my Algae Turf Scrubber, is there a way to dial it down? Thanks.

It would be about 330 gph, however every 90 degree elbow adds a foot as a general rule of thumb and that flow rate is at 39.4" (1 meter). You can turn it down, on the intake is a flow adjustment.

Thanks Roger. I need to run around 200-250 gph at first on the ATS. Is the flow adjustment the circular bottom piece that you twist?

Correct and even one more foot or elbow would drop it to 225, it drops quickly after 3 feet.

Sounds good. Just ordered one from MD. One more thing, what size hose does it accept on the output nozzle? Thanks Roger!

So another sweet bump for this thread and question to Roger @rvitko --

Would having a small nozzle at the end of the pump increase head pressure in the return line?

I'm not sure about how head pressure works -- My thoughts are (out of curiosity) i'll either get better performance with a LARGER diameter return line, or, a SMALLER diameter return line.

I just don't know which would give better performance.

I've got about a 3' run to my tank using all flex tubing if that helps.

It may make a very marginal difference, it is hard to say, in general if you need more flow or head pressure the best solution is a bigger pump, as the restriction in theory could marginal increase head pressure for a distance but past that distance the resistance will likely lower head pressure. This is something that would be trial and error and we have not tested.
