Tunze silence not very silent

I removed my tunze 1073.04 for cleaning but noticed a loud humming noise once i reconnected it. I think the impeller is causing the noise and vibration. Will this go away with a few days of operation, or is something wrong internally?

When I got mine it wasn't very quiet at first but after a couple of days it seemed like it wore itself in. I cant notice it at all over the other sounds my aquarium makes.

Typically noise will be caused by a loose ceramic bushing. I would suspect either the bottom bushing is not fully inserted or the silicon rubber boot over the ceramic bushing is torn. It is also possible that there is some calcium between the bushing and shaft causing a lot of drag and fraction and possibly dragging the bushing along while it is spinning.

was it extremely loud? mine is louder than my mag 5 pump. i thought something was wrong so i turned it off. Maybe i should check the insides to make sure nothings loose aswell?

It should be at least as quiet as any of the competing pumps. The typical cause of noise is the bushing at the back of the pump is loose, if it is not pushed in all the way or the silicon rubber around it is turn it will be noisy. It can also be noisy when new from air in the pump, this may take a few days to work itself out, air gets stuck in the bushing. Any grit stuck in these bushings, such as calcium, dried salt or sand will also result in noise.

Roger does it matter if I use a different fitting for the pump? the fittings that came with it didn't fit my hose :(

It might if the fitting was narrower or much wider, if it was the same or some in between size to the included fitting it should make no difference but any smaller could cause cavitation or aggrevate the issue of trapped bubbles and any bigger could have the same effect.

I had the same problem with mine. Ran whisper quiet then made a loud hum when I moved it...took it apart, and a piece of hair had gotten in there and also the bottom bearing wasn't seated fully. Cleaned it up, seated it firmly in place, and now it's whisper quiet again.

By the way, the whole rotor design of these pumps is great. With that silicone coating, there isn't any play of the rotor over the ceramic shaft...very tight tolerance. Compare that to your normal skimmer pump with tons of slop and play and it's night and day difference.

made sure the bottom bearing was fully seated as best i could and while its not "whisper quiet" it definitely is a whole lot quieter than before :)

I've gotten it whisper quiet by taking off the rubber suction cut feet, and placing the pump on a silicone pad. Eliminates the last of the vibration noise.

torero500- usually a hum will be from air or the silicon of the bearings being torn, I would check the bearing at the bottom of the hole, when this is torn it blocks the air purge system and you get a lot of vibration.

I'd love to know where to get a silicon pad as well. I usually put my pump on a doubled up square of filter floss, but a silicon pad would be even better!

I buy the silicone cooking mats that are designed to keep stuff from sticking to the pan. It's pretty thin but does the job. I get mine at target.

One thing I do with a pump that hums that has soft tubing is use a string to tie it up slightly off the bottom of the tak. This way it touches nothing and has water dampening any sound all around it.

mines still loud after doing all of these things =/ idk what to do. Its been running for 3 days now and its by far the loudest thing on my tank. Any other ideas?

If you shoot me a PM I can send a new impeller, that is the only possibility, when you get it you must change everything included. It is the only moving part, so if this is not just normal vibration resonating because the pump is on a hard surface with hard plumbing the whole way, then the impeller should fix it.
