i don't know if this is the right form but can any one tell me a little about tyree like what is the big deal about him is it just a reg tank owner like me and you or is he a company

thanks for any help on the subject

he was one of the first people to keep sps succesfully, more than ten years ago, steve tyree

I met Steve for the first time at this years Bay Area Coral Farmers' Market and he is a very nice guy. I think his business efforts are successful, but I doubt he is rich. He mostly just struck me as a real nice hobbyist who got into the expansion of reefing early and has capitalized to a certain extent, but not lost his roots as a hobbyist.

Tyree is basically a brand name. If your coral can be traced back to Tyree, people will pay 3-10 times more than if it is the exact piece sold without the Tyree label.

The majority of his corals are pretty cool, I just don't like how people go crazy when the Tyree name is put in front of a coral.

Like tubs, he's one of the nicer guys you'll meet in the hobby. Very devoted to coralkeeping. Somehow, the sparsely unfounded animosity toward him, hasn't wavered his passion.

He, among others, actually saves me a lot of time and money by not having to go through countless numbers of pieces to find great looking, tried-and-true specimens.

;)

Not taking anything away from him but the waiting list is ridiculous imo. I sure am not going to put my name down for 2011 for a piece of coral thats crazy but i guess thats the market. If you can get your hands on a true tyree piece thats great but its hard. the only tyree piece i have is a neon green toadstool and im not even sure its the real deal or not. If the coral looks good then im buying it, no matter if its a LE or not.

If you are buying a frag from someone, on RC for example, if they claim Tyree a lot of times they will be asked lineage of the frag; which is the way to trace it back to Tyree's tank.

I will defend Mr. Tyree by saying that he has some of the most colorfull corals on the market. You won't find that stuff on LA.

Whether or not it will still look like that in 3 months in your tank is another story though.

do you think alot of ppl say its tyree le and its not is there any way to conferm a corals linauge

That question just made me realize something. I believe most of the animosity isn't necessarily towards the gentlemen himself, because he has done a lot for the hobby, but more as a figurehead of what these people are afraid of.

Most of us know this hobby was a very grassroots sort of clanish group in the beginning. Those who often speak negativly about the LE, collector, or my favorite "designer" corals are worried about the loss of inocence and identity to commercialism and trendiness. However, I think most are upset about being priced out of the market and have a natural knee jerk, gut reaction to fads and commercialization. Trust me, that is me as well......I often swim against the current to my own beat, and am not one to easily jump on the band wagon, but I do collect them. It was the added element of the LEs I found interesting.

What I realized is that because of named LE/collectible corals and that it is the lineage that is what is important, that grassroots network still exists and is even greater because of it. For instance, I have a fair amount of Tyree LE's..........but my name has never been on a single wait list. However, I can appreciate those who do wait to get a direct piece from the mother colony and understand why someone would. It was that aspect of finding them, waiting, and finaly obtaining them from my fellow reefer which is what was important to me. It doesn't get anymore grassroots than that people.

Like it or not, the reef hobby has changed and will never be what it once was. The personalities like Tyree and Tubs, and the personification of certain pieces like the "Purple Monster" are as much an important part of the hobby as being able to id an Echinata from a Turaki. I work equally hard on both aspects of the hobby, and enjoy hearing the tales of where this or that piece came from and the story behind them. It adds another aspect to the hobby that is well.......more human.

I used to spend twice as much on wild pieces in the past, only to have them brown out and end up selling them for half of what I paid.

But just like DSB,SSB, or BB..........different strokes for different folks..........we should be ganging up on the LPS and Softy guys instead.

Ultimately it comes down to trust and integrity :D. I have many LE Tyree pieces, some from Tyree, some from the original owner of the coral where Tyree got it, some from other hobbyists that got them through Tyree or even other hobbyists. In the end it is about doing a little homework on the person you are buying from and trusting them. I don't think there is any other way to go about it. Some pieces are so obviously the real deal LE piece by looking at them, others may not be so easy to distinguish by looks.

basically, as said above, you have to trust who your getting the coral from. theres no certificate or records kept.

well, maybe some people do keep records of who they have received/ got certain corals from, but for the most part you just have to trust other hobbyiests and try and build a rep as a trustworhy, honest hobbyiest.

This is very true. I've been burned a couple of times. Never buy from the 'I got it from a guy who says it's a Tyree' hobbyist, that won't/can't give the name of that guy.

I've have bought several frags from Steve and every single time he has sent me big gorgeous frags that are very, very colorful! As stated before he takes a lot of the guess work out of finding the hidden gems!
