UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

Well I found it yesterday. 40 bucks a pop for a one time test. So three samples will cost me 120 bucks? Ouch. Maybe I'll just do 2, the big tank and the NSW.

never mind. I just took another look, their reference pack seems the way to go. 4 samples submitted at any time for 110 so that aint so bad. Maybe I'll go that way, do the 400 and the NSW and still have 2 samples for later.

Ha Ha, I was editing while you were typing.

What are you doing up so early on here? Me, I'm at work wasting tax payers dollars. LOL. Don't tell anyone.

i am always up early but still in bed. i have a laptop next to the bed.

i'm going up saturday for water, first time in two months.

1400 gallons, less than a tank of gas, and i have lunch with friends in Ventura that i have known for over 40 years. and reef club meeting saturday night.

fun day.

1400 gallons? WOW!

What are you using to haul that much? a Semi?

I'm looking at getting a 300G container to get water in that will fit in the wifes truck. Got to make sure it is sealed though and dosen't leak a drop or I'll be in trouble. That's the only truck we have left as i got rid of the rest and got a family car. But I still have my bike. :)

1400 gallons! dang! what kind of container do you use for that?

also, how long does it take? it takes me i think 20 or 30 minutes to fill up a 55g... you must be there all day, unless you get to use the big hose

i have a Ford F550 for my roofing business, and a bunch of different containers.

i have this 1200 gallon container buried in the front yard and plumbed into the garage/fish room.

i thought i had a photo of the containers but i couldn't find it.

it's all i have been using for about three years.

here is what i do once i get the water home. i filter it through a 1 micron sock as i pump it into the cistern you see above which is buried in the front yard.

i have just started running it through a few cups of carbon for a couple of days.

i am going to start adding another step this time. i haven't tested this batch yet but PO4 is usually around 0.08ppm. i am going to run it through GFO until it is zero before i add it to the system.

then i will add CaCl, MgCl, MgSO4, and soda carbonate to bring it to the levels i want in my tank.

it is still a lot cheaper than making my own water, as long as i have a truck and the time. about $75 for gas. it was a beautiful day on the beach too.

i also get to see friends who live in Ventura that i have known over 40 years.

there is still some concern about the quality for growing sps corals. after all it is a very populated coastline with lots of agriculture.

on the other hand Catalina Water Company does pretty much what i am doing to treat their water and they provide water to many of the wholesalers and Long Beach Aquarium and many other large venues.

if i had ozone i would treat with that too. that is one thing they do that i don't do.

any updates on this? i am going to be going in a couple hours... hoping everything is good when i get there

Im here filling up my barrels and there is a pretty bad smell. I filled up the first one half ways and it looks very dirty, so I switched the hose to the second barrel and its clean and not smelling anymore

Its always a good idea to run the hose for a minute or two. It may be going anoxic if there are higher levels of bacteria. Same thing happens in your siphon hoses for you tanks if you let the water sit in there for over a day. Pretty normal stuff.

Maybe there is less traffic to the hose since a lot of folks are getting out of the hobby or just not using it much due to the bad press from this thread.

you all shoud try what i have found out that works for me 50/50 scripps and catalina the nano reef has realy taken off now
