UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

Too far to dive. ;)

I agree with that! I'll start mixing my own water before I drive to Scripps for it, although I do miss San Diego!

since I go to san diego every so often for work, maybe I should bring back a few drums full. I have brought back around (5) 5 gallon jugs back from travel since it is easy to carry. The scripps nsw hose is so much faster than ucsb.

After all the reports of the foul NSW, I had to see for myself. I stopped by there on the way home from work today and turned the hose on and it immediately had a foul odor(couldn't identify it). I wanted to take a sample but didn't have a container. I did indeed let the water run for almost 2 minutes and it continued to smell and didn't look very clear(even my coworker thought the same and he knows nothing of the hobby). Does anyone know of a staff member who can check into this? Maybe a filter hasn't been changed due to the summer break.

The filters haven't been changed in almost 40 years. ;)

they us elarge sand/rock filters that they back flush when the top gets a bit blocked. But they haven't changed them since they first installed them over 40 years ago. Oh and they have something like 10 of them that are about 10 feet cubed. They process over 200,000 Gallons a day. ;)

it is a sand filter that filters to 20 microns. i don't think the sand wears out, even after forty years. they do back wash it regularly. maybe the summer crew has slipped a bit in the maintenance. i know Scott Simon, (the man in charge) is even busier with the summer programs than he is during the regular school year.

Actually it's because the water is stagnant and has been for almost two weeks now. I work on campus for design and construction services and today found out why the water stinks.

The building that we get our water from is going to be torn down in the near future. There were twelve 12' cylinders that were removed and now the sea water is being diverted to someplace else on campus. So basically nobody else is using it except us and it is not flowing. Nobody on campus realized that it was an issue until I brought it up today. I believe they are going to open some valves so that the water circulates some.

The reason the building is being torn down is because they are putting up a new building in that location, the Ocean Science Education Building. I have been assured that there will still be public access to NSW but it will be in a different location.

That's all I know at this point, I will try to get an update on it tomorrow.

ditto what they all said. Keep us updated as best you can. I need some water but will wait until I hear word that it's flowing good water again.

If there's anything we can do as a community to help, just let us know as there are a lot of people who use it.

ckprax - Any chance you could talk to Scott at R.E.E.F. to get access to the NSW connection at his facility? That would make a lot of people very very happy.

I went about a week ago and switched the feeder valves on so that in theory should return the circulation to the tank. I haven't been for water since then but it should be back to normal. Other than what I did I do not know of anything else that can be done. If it still smells we may just need to run the water for a long time so the resevoir fills with new water

I went a bout 6 days a go now and got my very 1st NSW got around 12-15 ish gal no smell at all look very clean...
was fishing the cycle on my 150 and need a big top off in my sump fung. so I added it and all is good so far :)

I picked up about 250 G on Friday with no problems. Used it on Saturday for water changes and all is good.

On another note, any ideas on what is going to happen and when with the building/ water access? Any ideas of what a interim solution will be while they work on the building? Any info at all from people in the know?

Thanks.

Ray did you ever found out about the test ..?
