UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

what are the water parameters? has anyone tested the water recently for all the usual testable stuff?

i am especially interested in nitrate and phosphate.

So Is the NSW still available and at the same place? Im thinking of going up there to get some more water. Thank you

I thought you were making your own salt water. I have been fighting a cyano issue for almost 4 months now and have switched to D&D.

What was your issue with the UCSB NSW Danny, I've been using it since 08/2009 and so far the sps corals I have are doing great.

So nobody knows if the NSW still available and at the same place? I know the were moving it to a different place, but not sure if they did it and where the place it.

I went to get some about a month ago and it was in the same place as before. It should still be there.

i am still awaiting pix of reef tanks using this water. i have stopped using it until i figure out why i can't grow acropora in my system.

our coastline is one of the most populated coasts in the world. lots of runoff goes into the ocean off our coast.

there are some scientific articles i have read about the decreased marine life in the channel islands thought to be from coastal runoff.

ian- are you still reading this thread? are you still using ASW?

anyone else stop using this water and see a difference in their system?

i would still love to use it if possible. i am still having problems with my system. i used the water exclusively when i set up my system but i haven't used the water in a few months now so maybe it isn't the water but it could still be a contributing factor.

I am about where Reefski is. I used UCSB NSW since I set up my reef tank in 2004 until this year. Have been "enjoying" lots of bubble algae in my tank for quite some time, so thought I'd give ASW a try. Frankly, not seeing a big difference. Some corals do great, others don't, pretty much as before.

But I don't have enough time to really take care of the tank as well as I'd like, so hard to tell what makes a difference and what doesn't. For example, I am WAY late on changing out my Rowaphos.

Overall though, most of the stuff in the tank seems happy, I've had the same fish for 5 years, can't remember the last time I lost a coral completely.

i would just like to add that Eric Borneman recommended filtering the water prior to use through a 1 micron filter sock, and adjusting alk and Calcium which were always low.

phosphates were always high. up to 0.16ppm but never lower that 0.07 either.

I stopped using it about a year ago. Too much of a hassle to treat it before use, high in PO4 and low in other areas. Never found out the exact reason it is so unworthy of using in a reef tank. I'm guessing its the overall chemistry if the water. My corals have all thanked me, and are happier then ever. The water would be fine if you have a cold water tank with some local starfish and anenomes....

Some food for thought here Carl.

As you know, I had two tanks, my big 400G and a 72G. Both I tried to grow corals in and strictly used NSW.

The large tank seemed to only grow LPS and soft corals. I could never get any SPS to grow in that tank.

The smaler tank would grow just about anything I put in it. SPS, LPS, Softies. I had some luck growing some of harder SPS corals in this tank. The only difference in the tanks was the 72 had more lights and I used seachem products on that tank exclusively, buffer, calicum and trace elements. Both tanks were very simple, LR and skimmer. The only difference between the two was I ran ozone on the big tank and had a bigger fish load.

Does this prove or disprove NSW is good? No. But just a little food for thought of what I have seen in my own tanks.

I would store my water for long periods of time. I did 50% water changes when I changed water. I didn't filter any of the water.

Can we still get NSW at UCSB? I need to cook some rock and don't want to spend money just to cook rock. It's been 2 years since I got water from there.
