Using a bulkhead overflow

Hi,

My friend is giving my a non-reef ready TruVu Acrylic tank 60R tank (http://www.truvuaquariums.com/ma00060r.html) which I plan to make into a mixed reef tank.

There's already a 2" hole cut towards the back, which seems like a logical place to put a bulkhead. Since there's no built-in overflow or really no way for a hanging overflow, do you recommend just installing a bulk and one of the screw on strainers? Is that adequate? What if it the strainer gets clogged? Won't there be major drainage noise since it's sucking in air?

a 2" hole is between 2 different size bulkheads.....a 1" bulkhead takes a 1-3/4" hole & a 1.5" bulkhead takes a 2-3/8" hole. make sure of the existing hole size before getting w/ them. if it is indeed 2", you are probably gonna have to drill it bigger for the 1/5" bulkhead

probably what you want is their 700gph kit that is the overflow box, 1.5" bulkhead, threaded street elbow & 1.5" glass bit (but a regular hole saw will work on acrylic)....they can do a custom order for ya w/out the glass drill bit. they trule are one of the best companies to deal w/ as far as customer service

for that size tank, 1.5" overflow might be a bit too big, so you can always reduce it down to 1". that is what i did w/ mine....see my lil red house for the build thread in progress

I agree that a glassholes overflow would be a good choice. I believe they can make a custom one for you depending on where your hole is.

As for the hole size, if it is 2" then it's likely cut for a sch80 bulkhead. More expensive but much nicer bulkheads. Savko.com is a great site as they list the hole size, bulkhead size & sell very reasonably.

yeah forgot about the schedule 80 bulkheads in my earlier post....savko lists the sch80 ! as taking a 2" hole
