Vertex Skimmer club

Now that my IN 100 has been running for a couple of days, how far do you need to close the adjustment tube to actually get skimmate? I ran it open for a couple of days and didn't really get any. (I know it needs to 'break in', but I did run it in a vinegar solution for about 5 hrs prior to putting it in the tank.) Right now to get any skimmate in the cup I need to set it almost to totally closed. (I ran it almost closed for about 6 hrs. and got a tiny bit in the bottom of the cup.) Is this normal?

OK, sorry about that. I went back to the first part of this entire thread (before the split) ands saw that a lot of people are runnng it close to closed - no problems. Still looking good!

Got a question for Vertex IN-180 owners: how much clearance does it need for cup removal?

My AGA stand is very low, and I'm not sure I can fit the 180 under there, but a 100 would be undersized for my 120G with 20G sump.

i have aga stand also and it barely fits under there just enough room to remove cup but not the lid to the cup.

bottom of my stand to bottom of tank is 26 inches plus my skimmer is in a 30 gallon long sump which puts me at about 25 1/2" also and i am able to remove cup to clean it. But if you get anything taller than a 30 gallon long you will not get skimmer inside the sump unless you got a way to slide sump out to access it. I can barely get my skimmer in and out of sump had to turn it in different angles to get in and out but it worked.

i think you can make it work depending on how tall your sump is.

Thanks for all the info! My sump is 15 3/4" tall, set back a little from the entrance of the cabinet, which gives a little more space to wrestle things in and out of the sump.

I was hoping I could possibly assemble the skimmer partially inside the sump.
My back-up option would be an Octopus Extreme 160, which is somewhat smaller.

just took my 180 out and gave it a good vinegar bath and cleaned salt creep out of air hole and skimmer is goin great again.

here you go mojo heres some money shots. lol

I wonder if you could run a sicce on a 250?
I believe you could, just don't know that you'd want to put another $100+ dollars into the skimmer. The stock pump and pinwheel is advertised to pull about 36 SCFH where as the stock Sicce is advertised to pull 20 to 28 SCFH with the pinwheel. If you're a gambler at heart, you could do a mesh job, but then I believe you're sacrificing reliability.

I really think that Vertex did a good job matching the pumps air vs water throughput on these skimmers. I bought some mesh with the skimmer thinking that I would probably end up meshing it, but so far I've been very happy with its production.

Did you notice the skimmer performance suffering, or did you just do this as part of your PM?

i do vinegar bath cause i had alot of coralline algae growing inside of skimmer from refugium light in sump. I usually only clean skimmer cup weekly and check air hole once a month for salt creep build up.

you can see algae of different kinds start to grow inside of skimmer and i want to keep the bubble flowing smoothly in my skimmer. Keeping it clean keeps it running at full potential.

Was just thinking out loud Wippjas,I am kinda wary about the resun pumps, even though it seems the 250 motor problems were minimal

Can't blame you there... I felt the same way. I haven't seen any issues other than the impellers, and as far as I've seen all of the pumps with issues have been fixed. They've been extremely responsive and timely to the issues that have come up.
