Now In the Club

I'm now officially in the Club. WOOHOO!!

I ordered the IN180 from Premium Aquatics, it was delivered a few days ago. I just got around to opening the box and installing it and all I can say is wow this thing is huge compared to my old Turboflouter skimmer. I'm guessing that this will skim the pants off the old Turboflouter skimmer. The old Tuoboflouter took 1-2 weeks to fill the collection cup. I bet this is even better. It is so big I had to remove 2 of my baffles just to get the new skimmer in the sump. I have a 120g tank with 40g breeder. Now, on to the questions.

I have it in 8'' of water. Is that good? I had to make a stand for it to bring it up from 9''

I know it is new and breaking in but just to get the head close to the top it the valve is almost closed. Is this normal. When it is open all the way the water is really low.

Where should the water level be at? I have it set (where the little bubbles meet the large ones) about an inch below the collection cup connection. is this good?

I'm just trying to get the optimal settings. Any help would be great.

i have mine in 8" of water also and is almost turned to close also. i get a 2 liter every 10 days approximately but was getting a 2liter every 6 or 7 days when i first got it but now that tank is doing better with a better skimmer it doesn't pull as much as it did which is good because its doin its job now.

So my IN-80 started making a really loud grinding noise I took it apart and the impeler looks fine I called Marine Depot they said it is my impeller there sending me another one. Has anyone had this problem? they told me to use Silicon grease but I'm not sure thats healthy for my aquarium.

Reeflover, a new impeller shouldn't need silicon grease to operate corectly. Haven't seen any lube stations on a coral reef lately.

can't remember and I'm too lazy to look through the thread :p .. whats the ideal depth for the IN180 and the IN250? thanks in advance :)

Just got the IN-100 yesterday. Doing a build so it may be a few weeks before I get it going. I'll be putting it in my Sump/Refugium appoximately 20 gallons. The Display tank is a 40 Gallon Breeder. Can't wait!

You might want to run it in a vinegar bath for a couple of weeks to make sure you don't have any issues with the impeller. Some have had problems with the IN-100 impellers. This way you don't have a tank without a skimmer if you do have issues.

Just a thought.

Do you run it in pure white vinegar or ma solution, and what does this do? Thanks Mixed solution ro/di and vinegar

Many times people run their new skimmers in a mixture of RO/DI and vinegar to remove manufacturing oils from the acrylic. I usually bypass this process as I really haven't seen any ill effects. Once the skimmer has run for a while, the process will remove calcium and other deposits from the skimmer and pump, which is very beneficial to the skimmers performance.

To evaluate the impeller you could also just mix up a five gallon bucket of saltwater and let it run. All you really want to do is exercise the pump for a while to make sure it doesn't have any problems. Vertex and their suppliers have been exceptional as far as backing up the product, but I would want to know sooner rather than later if there was a problem.

I found that running them in vinegar causes a longer break in time.

Most of these skimmers work well from 7 to 8 inches of water. THe in 250 is different from the other as it is very tall in comparison. so it will run in some deeper water. I have been thinking about getting a in 180 and modding the pump to see what can be done with this thing. Make a custom venturi ect... we will see.

Ok all, Just for the fun of it I ordered a Vertex IN 180 today. Stock air intake is 720 lph. It is my goal to bring this up to around 900 lph of air and see how it does. I will try to only mod stock parts as this will make it so the rest of you can do the same. I think this body has alot of potential. I dont think you have to spend a fortune to get a nice working skimmer.
More to come. Ill post some videos ect.. when I get it monday.

sounds good mojo. this will be interesting to tag along to.. too bad you didn't order last week though, MD had a $50 off coupon that ended on the 1st for vertex'.:(

yea, Its all good. I usually order stuff like this from premium aquatics becuase it is so close and if I need anything at all its next day ups ground and Jeremy always takes care of any issue I might have.
But I ordered a couple hours late so I wont have it until monday or I would have had it tomorrow. I want to really see what this thing can do. My recent review on the MiniS has me looking atthe sicce pump again. I have so many ideas that would fix the issue of reverse rotation problem but no volute to play with. and well I thought well what about a vertex. No rotation problem with the pump. Now I know the resun pump is pretty cheap. The biggest downside to these skimmers in m opion. But. What if? I will make a venturi or a couple to see what performance gains I get there if any. Once I figure out what will work with my machined parts then incorporate those into those stock parts. So we will see.

Mojo your work convinced me to get the IN-100 months ago and was the best skimmer investment I have ever made can't wait to see what you come up with next
