Vertex Skimmer club

Anyone know if the external model is available yet? Omega I think it is called. Or, are any of the other models possible to modify to use externally?

Also, does the collection cup have a drain for an external collection overflow?
Thanks
John

There will be an EX line (I assume similar in price/design to the IN line) and there will also be an Omega line (I assume similar in price/design to the Alpha Royal Exclusiv Line).

Should be interesting, I bet these are going to be sweet.

Are you talking about a drain on the IN models?? If so, the answer is yes there is a drain in the collection cup.

Here's a random picture of mine a took a while back that shows the drain (I keep mine plugged).

Thanks. Looks excellent. Currently have an Aqua C 180 - never been happy with it - this looks better to me. Just don't have room in my sump, and have good external plumbing set up.

Well my IN-180 came in and I assembled it and threw it in the sump.

Initial impressions are that: the skimmers are built very well with smooth transition lines. The pump is quiet I have had zero problems or noises so far from the pump.

I am impressed so far with the skimmer, it hasnt began making skimmate but it is still breaking in.

With my extra pinwheel, i am definately going to make a mess wheel as well. I think the skimmer could handle a little more air and would run like a true beast then.

Skimmer pics for those following the vertex in-80! Seems to be broken in.

Per suggestion from Mojo, I raised the water level so that gunk doesn't build up in the neck. Seems to be working better now. I have it set about 90% closed.

Are the pumps the same on each model, just toned down volutes? Or does each model have its own rated pump? If so what is the gph on my IN-180 anybody?

I believe they're different pumps.

I'm not sure about the gph but the air draw is 720lph at 32w for the IN180, if that helps at all.

This was a pics of my In-180 after 3 days. I am very impressed with the skimmer. Here are some pics, they aren't very good and thats why my hobby is reefing...lol

I knew the lph, but I was wondering what other pumps have been tried on this skimmer and what would be a good fit other than the resun.

Just got my In 180, do I leave it completely open for the first day? And then set it to my desirable skimmate?

2dawg- don't know about many other pumps being used.. if you go back a couple pages you'll see mojo doing a mesh mod on a 180, if that interests you :).

vallon- that should work just fine. you'll probably notice that it won't be completely broken in until a week or two, so keep an eye on it when you start closing the wedge pipe.

Looks good MrKrabby.
JohnnyB, lower your water level a little. You aren't going to have any water left in your display if you keep skimming that wet. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Thats what I usually do. Good luck with it.

Man, thought that was the level. Everyone else think I should lower the water level too? That's 2 or 3 days worth. just a little right tang? Need to keep it kind of high/wet because I don't have a heavy bioload at the moment. Had it much lower (pics on previous page) but had a bit of gunk building up in the neck at that height. Did I adjust too much? How do you guys judge your sweet spot? I can't really go by color bc I have a nano with low bioload.

You will always have some buildup in the neck. You kinda have to play it by ear.I usually have the bubbles breaking about a third of the way up from the bottom of the cup to the top of the neck. THat is where I usually start. This is after I let it run wide open for a day.

Everyone has their own opinion. And I cant say one is better than the other. THis is just what I do and works well for me. Although I watch skimmer my skimmer as much as I do my 42" plasma TV.

Wet skimming should look like what mrkrabby posted, your skimmate looks more like just water. You want the skimmate to look like super dark thick espresso, or the end result after eating some bad tamales from a taco truck.

Can I ask you guys what the smallest space in a sump these would fit in - (I have about 10x12 in only)
1. Vertex In 180
2. Vertex Alpha Cone 170
and, how much performance difference is there between them? (People seem to be very happy with either)

Thanks for contributing.

Is this accurate? I believe that wet skimmste is NOT as dark as dry skimmate. So wet skimmate will look more watery. I also think it is unlikely that I would ever get skimmste that dark given the small size of my system (40g) and low bioload (2 clownfish).

Does anyone else gave suggestions on how wet to skim with a low bioload? Thanks.

Just got a my IN-180 today from marine depot. Has anyone ordered a vertex skimmer from them recently? I got a gen 1, wasnt expecting that....

I would not e happy if I just got it. I would most likely send it back. its not a huge deal. But would you buy a 08, or an 09 car if it were the same price. and the 09 had some upgrades
