Can I ask you guys what the smallest space in a sump these would fit in - (I have about 10x12 in only)
1. Vertex In 180
2. Vertex Alpha Cone 170
and, how much performance difference is there between them? (People seem to be very happy with either)

The vertex in 180 i dont think will fit.
as far as the alpha 170, they are not out yet. te first batch are still in route to distributers. so we should start seeing them next week. I would look at a bk mini for a small footprint. Or maybe even a mrc ocean force.
What size tank are you running this on. The vertex in 100 would most likely fit.

Talked with marine depot this morning. They are unsure how I ended up with a gen 1, they have not been shipping them for some time. Sending it back for a gen 2... It's a bummer though, I hate waiting! I am like a little kid when I order stuff online. I want it set up now.

Thanks, Mojo
Tanks has been running almost 7 years. 90 gal tank, 45 gal fuge, smallish sump. Water quality is pretty good - the fuge is very active with mud, rocks, algae and a mangrove that is going a bit crazy.
Some smallish fish and 3 anemones in the tank.
Used to have quite a few corals, but a cooling fan failed while I was away 3 yrs ago and I lost them - and I have just concentrated on letting the anemones get fat since. Might get some more corals, though.

The Aqua C initially worked but it isn't great, and I thought I might replace it with something better.

Actually, what really happened to re-kindle my interest was a pipe sprung a leak, flooded my basement sump room resulting in a major cleanup and recheck of all my parts - and I am feeling like getting back into it again. Why not?

(of course, my evil plan for a giant tank in the basement is still in the back of my mind....... but I would like to stay married...)

Anyway, I HAD wondered about the Vertex external - which is listed on the website but I gather does not yet exist - so, maybe a really small in sump skimmer - and as you say, maybe the BK Mini would be just the thing. Or, the 170. - I think they are already in stock and selling here (in Vancouver)

that very well may be. you will have to let us know what you get and look forward to pictures. Good luck

I have an IN80 skimmer that's just breaking in. It's been running for about a week and a half. I came home today and it's overflowed back in to the sump. I can't seem to tune it back down to a reasonable level. I took it apart, cleaned the collection cup, venturi, airline, and checked all the plumbing. Why would it be doing this? It's in 8" of water, and the outlet pipe is half out of the water as well.

something in the water... glue a food something. Sometimes when people paint in their house it will do this as well.

I can't imagine anything getting in there, plus I just did a 25% water change. What now, another water change, or wait it out?

Ok so the Vertex in 80 is on sale for only $125!!! Ive been wanting to change out my seaclone 100 for a while and this is what I want to replace it with.

I have a total water volume of about 60 gallons.

I was gonna get the in 100 but with this steal......im gonna go with the in 80 as they probably wont be much of a difference :)

Smart decison?

and are there any mods to make the in 80 perform better than it already can?

I will be ordering it tom :)

I have a 55g with a 20g sump, and a Vertex IN-80. I love this skimmer!

I thank this thread too for helping with my purchase decision. Be sure and hold your breath when you clean the cup - it smells rank!!!

My skimmer came yesterday and it is awesome...one question tho

How high is the water level in your skimmer? Not sure where to keep it at. I have it right above the black bracket going around the skimmers neck (the first one...right above the vertex symbol).

Well, i just received my IN-180 yesterday. Horray! Its huge and it skims vinegar and water very well. I noticed it was also really quiet! I like it!

in-100
3 weeks and still pulling poop!

setting the level in the skimmer takes patients. i have mine set to where the small bubbles begin to break into large froth bubbles a little less than halfway up the neck

How much clearance room needs to be between the skimmer and sump wall. Thanks

As long as it's not touching I don't see there being a problem (I have mine under an inch away on 2 sides)... I wouldn't want to have it touching the sump wall simply because of the added noise due to vibration. :)
