Sorry to hear that .
Now I know these pumps can have issues but u just stated a new one . I have never had my shaft break . I had my pump apart so many times you would have thought I was on a assembley line working for Resun .
THe impeller shaft is solid and hard . All I can think of is when it was taken apart the shaft was stuck in the impeller .It had to be forced out and it broke getting it out . Just curious how did it break ?
U did have whomever send you a new one ?

never seen one break either, call the supplier they will send you a new one, not sure what someone could do to break a shaft. I still love mine solid as a tank runs quiet and skims great.

all manufactures

all manufactures

Seems that all skimmers have caveats. I believe that I've read many a post on sicce pumps also. It breaks down to what you want to pay and what you are willing to put into something. OCto's and MSX's have thier own little oddities. I dont know for sure, but I would be willing to bet all do. Right now people are talking about askol pumps and mini air for octo skimmers. In reefdom you kinda' have to have a tinker's spirit anyway. It just shows the love you have for the hobby. If I had kept a log of how many times I've adjusted this or changed that in my 6yr. old SPS tank, it would be longer than this post,LOL.

In these times people look for value. What they can afford. But experience (what little I have) teaches me to be prepared for the worst. I keep spare impellers for all the pumps I have on my tank. It may be irritating that I have to, but if I get lazy on my cleaning and a shaft calcifies I have a spare while I cuss myself cleaning the other one. Whatever skimmer I decide to get, Iwill have spares. That said, hidnreef, was you pump a gen 1 or gen 2?

The first generation of the Vertex skimmers had the pump standing vertical, and the outlet then entered the skimmer through a 90. The bubble plates were also higher in the skimmer to accomadate this higher input from the pump. The Gen 2 skimmer has the pump laying on its side, with the input lower in the skimme body. With the lower pump input, they were able to lower the bubble plate as well.
They had problems with the impellers on the Gen 1 skimmers because the manufacturer didn't get all of the ceramic dust out of the new impellers. This dust caused several impellers to fail relatively quickly. Since then they have fixed that manufacturing defect, and there really haven't been to many complaints with the Gen 2s.
HTH

So how big is the 250 really? I ready the dimensions but would like to see some pictures as I hope it will fit under the stand the tank is coming with.

Look back one page.... I have the gen2 IN-180 and I believe that the only dimension that is different is the height.

which I think the height is 30" instead of 24"?

This is going to be a huge step up for me from using a HOB skimmer on a 120 that was rated for 120g which is a ProClear Aquatics one. That tank is being sold once I get everything switched over to the 200 that is being delivered this week.

How much room is needed to remove the collection cup?
I would suggest that you keep one inch of clearance. You could probably get by with a little less though.

What is the difference between a Gen 1 and Gen 2?
Just wanted to add they include a stand for the pump to sit on its side and the have a clever little air silencer as well. So the Gen 2 lowers the bubble plate rotates the pump and adds a air siliencer.

Well Crap my stand is not going to be tall enough as it is only 30" tall...........

look at a 180 or the 280
the 280 i shorter but is wider then the 250

my 155g tank and 75g sump/fuge cant keep up with my in250 gen1
