Vic's 100gal Starphire From Philippines

Vic i like it. maganda. i been away too long. i dont even know the condition of the reefs there now. back in the 80's all still in tact. what about now? there r tons of different sps species in our ocean, may not colorfull as any other sps but the shapes r awesome and rare. find them for me will ya ? i might still have a space for one more or two in my 300. he...

good luck on the build..

Menard

thanks bro. well, there's still a lot of really good reefs to visit but unfortunately, dynamite fishing have destroyed a lot of reefs already. i wish all of those dynamite fishers lose their hands. come over and ill show you around :)

great looking tank you got there. hope my 75 ends up looking half as good. i visited the 100 islands this summer and man...if only i had some baggies with me. looken forward to seeing more in the future, keep us posted

thanks :) 100 islands is almost a wreck now to be honest. resorts, irresponsible tourists throwing trash everywhere, dynamite fishing, cyanide fishing and all that will soon completely ruin that majestic place :(

By grey area do you mean it is not legal but not enforced? Lets not be naive. Coral importation to USA and Canada is heavily regulated. With out regulation it is left wide open for abuse.

Not saying I wouldnt do what you are doing if I was in your shoes, but just knowing that anyone can go and take what they want from the ocean with no one watching and no record is a little unsettling.

Im just glad as you seem to be taking great care of your reef. But I'm sure many are taking corals and are not quite as dedicated as you to keeping them alive. Especially if they come at no cost.

Sorry to get your thread side tracked. Beautiful tank you have there.

no problems, we were having a healthy exchange of thoughts. thank you for liking my tank. yep, its a sad truth over here. either people just doesnt care or the ones living by the sea and mostly are fishermen arent educated to take good care of these beauty.

there's a place here where local corals and fishes are sold at and its not a hidden place. in fact gazillions of people go to the said place as its a mixed market of all pets from birds to dogs to fishes and sadly, corals as well. you'd definitely shed a tear if you see how vendors there keep the livestocks they sell and more horrible thought is that they misinformed on how to correctly take care of them. :(

Tang ina ang ganda pare! Keep up the good work! Wish I was back in the motherland right about now!

hehehe thanks pare. come over and ill bring you to my little piece of reef... there's a secluded place a good 5 minutes drive from my house where i put LS, frags, etc that i have gotten bored of or arent doing well in my aquarium. instead of just throwing them in the bin, i rather take them there :)

Rommell!!! I think it's rainy season in the PI right now. :)

@mrvicz - Your tank is looking better and better kabsat! :)

some corals showing washed out colors some showing better coloration. the older ones are coloring up nicely, newer ones are having washed out colors. i think thats normal with wild caught corals :(

acros on the sand needs to be returned back to the sea, no more space. monti to be mounted this weekend :)

hope you enjoyed!

Nice looking tank.
Do you have pics of the fixture and how you mounted the lights.
I have LEDs as well but no T5s.

Here's a video of my tank showing the LS on the left side :)

thanks for watching! :)

Wow, I am jealous. Not just of your ability to go swimming (instead of shopping) for corals but of how beautifully clean your design is.

Congrats on a beautiful build!

its nice to see a well setup sps tank especially in the philippines where the majority of reef tanks are average at best(well at least from what i saw 6 years ago). nice build and beautiful setup. must be nice to have a endless supply of nice sps in your "backyard".

i also checked out that cartimar place many years back and only things i found in terms of reefs were poorly setup tanks with only lps and anemones understandably. on a side, note, it was interesting to see some exotic pets out there.

wish you were closer to manila cuz it would be nice to check out your setup as ill be out there last 2 weeks this dec for xmas and newyears.

filipino reefers woohoo

:) +1 nice equips there too

i dont want side track the discussion here but does anyone know if this store u mention thats worth checking out actually have sps? have they lifted the restriction from philippine coral?

Hi there Vic. You have a very nice tank and beautiful corals. Really liked the video.

Can you tell me how many individual LED's are on each of the KR92's and how many watts each one is running?

I am tring to work out the lighting in relation to 250w halides. It looks like they are working quite well as your coral colours are very good.

Thanks.

marinehub doesnt sell corals all the time, only fishes and equips. altho they do occasionally sell imported corals -- just not sure if it includes SPS.

thanks.

regarding the KR92, i havent actually counted them lol but my units are KR93-18 (they upgraded it to KR93 free of charge after some blues got busted) and they pack a 70W power each fixture. on a side note, I have supplemented my KRs with 4 T5s -- 2x ati blue+, 1 KZ FP, 1 ati aquablue. all are around 5"-6" from water surface. i think my lighting is too much as I have kind of a bit washed out colors on some of my corals. but since all my corals are wild caught, maybe they're just going through their fading stage lol!

cheers!
