Sup Nvr, I've been on here lurking for a while, and I figure it's about time for me to share some pictures of my project. Here's some picture of my diy external overflow box.

And after:

Project start date was day after Thanksgiving, 11/26. I'm very slow, so hopefully I can get this up and running by next Thanksgiving, lol.

Brian- I started it up with two holes at both end and used a circular saw with a diamond blade to cut the glass.

Chris, I end up buying the glass from T and D glass in Sacramento.
Vince you have Been lurking the forums but I've known you a few months. Nic build man keep the updates comin

Very nice to see you posting Vince. Well welcome and we hope to see more pics and progress as you go. Maybe one day you can make a meeting or event? :) If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask. I know of a member that runs an external overflow and that thing is gorgeous. There is a wealth of knowledge just within' NVR country so go ahead and fire away.

PS...I spy a monster skimmer in the background of one of the pics ;)

Wow good eyes Ryan, it's a SRO xp5000. This thing is huge. Only problem I have now is getting it to fit inside my sump.

Check out the size of it next to my favorite hot sauce.
Dopeness! Abe used to run of those or something similiar. It was a beastly skimmer and produced some gnarly skimmate. Can't wait to see how this build goes. Good work Vince! :)

Nice set up, Vince. What are your plans for the tank? mixed reef? fish only? etc...

Were there any cross braces that you removed when you cut the glass? Nice job on that by the way. I would have been more than a little nervous about using the circular saw but it looks like it turned out really well.

Jacob, this tank will be a mixed reef tank with a few friendly fish. I'm pretty much upgrading from a 90g to 210g. So whatever that is in the 90g is all going over.

The top of the tank has the same trimming like the bottom. So it has that two black plastic strip going across. I'm planning to replace that two plastic piece with two glass strip going from the front of the tank all the way back to the overflow box. I'm hoping that should be enough support.

After reading a few other build thread, I realize that the silicon I used on the overflow box isn't strong enough. I guess the GE silicon 1 that you buy at lowes/homedepot is for sealant purpose only, and doesn't act as an adhesive. I've just ordered GE RTV 108, a commercial adhesive/sealant. I'm glad I found this out now, and not later.

Good catch Vince. That would of been a horrible thing to experience later down the road. What are the dimensions of the skimmer? Jeff is really good at making sumps so you might want to ask him or you can DIY one also. All these large tanks and I'm rockin' a 40...man I really don't want to go bigger lol

Awesome. That's what I was getting at. We actually have (well, past tense I guess) someone in the club who had their front panel separate because the wrong silicone was used on the bracing. Coincidentally I think his tank was a 210 also... needless to say the damage to his home was more than minor water damage. It would be a good idea to replace the braces with pieces of glass wider than the original braces since the top frame is trimmed in the back.

Anyway, this looks to be an awesome build. Any info you have on the rest of the equipment and your installation... post it up! :)

Here are some updated pictures of the tank. I reinforced it with a lot more glass this time and also used the right type of silicone, RTV108.

While waiting for the silicone to dry, I started on the stand. Nothing too fancy, I just wanted to make it strong. Vince

Jeff, I'm not sure if I am gonna paint the back or not. I was told that black will absorb 20 or 30% of the light output. I'm not sure if this is true or not. Inputs?

Pedro, thanks dude, have you set up your tank yet after the move?

Well I got a sneak peak at the project the other day while picking the light. Looking good. Can't wait til the end result.

Build is looking sweet Vince! How is it working with glass? I would be so scared and nervous. Are the edges of the glass sharp or are they filed down?
