Virtual tank tour anyone?

if its not DI there is a good chance there is something in it. I dont know if what is left over after RO will cause the cyano or not. i have headr people say when the TDS after DI reads nore than 1 or 2 they change out the DI resin filter. i would bet the RO from Olivers has more than 1 or 2 TDS. all that being said RO is still better than tap. :)

Nick.

Increase water flow and when you do water changes make sure to vacuum or stir up half of your sand each time. That stack of rock aganst the wall is a nitrate generating structure, stack your rocks in a way that has a small foot print on the sand and allows water to flows through and around it. This will help minimize cyano.

Guess i do really need to take the class in rockscaping 101 and fast :) I'm waiting to set up my lights on the 20L so i can move everything over and redo the scaping in this tank just have to wait for then to arrive from China.

DI would not cause cyano. A lack of use of it could contribute though. Plus in the case of tap water containing chloramines (as with Petaluma tap water), ammonia from chloramine breakdown is absorbed by the DI.

I have to admit i did do maybe 2 water changes with tap water maybe that helped it grow again :( that is when my RO/DI stopped working

Quite probably. Starting with water that does not contain algae fueling compounds really helps. That alone though will not guarantee victory against nuisance algaes (or bacteria in this case), as I seem to love to demonstrate with my tank. ;)

Are we still progressing north, or can we just go at will? I'll get the tank cleanedup and take some pics if we are at Windsor, although I don't think we've seen everyone from South of here.

Couple closeups from the frag rack.

These guys were super cheap from jofish a while back. Got them as dragon eyes but they don't look like to me. Skirt is super spikey.

Again super cheap from jofish. These actually look like dragon eyes, imo. Some duncs in back.

Since SR seems to be a bashful group, I'll post some of my tank in progress. It's taking way longer than I (or my wife) wants, but there is progress.

The tank is about 120g., built by Gen Watanabe of 'Kritter Tanks' in Menlo Park. External overflow. When completed there will be a refugium in the room behind the tank.

Part of the big delay is the work on the fireplace. The tank will be next to the FP so we wanted to finish the work there before the tank is up. I'm doing the woodwork on the FP - slowly! :o Next will be the tank stand, which I'm going to build. OK, enough background, now the stunning pics!! ;)

OK, SR, let's see your tanks. They HAVE to be better than this!!

Unfortunately, until I get this algae problem under control I won't be posting any pics. It's quite embarrassing and VERY frustrating to say the least:headwallblue:

I dont want to derail this thread, so we'll just keep it to this comment. I have all of the above kinds of Algae. My perams are perfect, and 0 on nitrate and phosphate. I think I have it nailed down to large temp fluxuations (chiller should arrive this week) and going to start running GFO this week as well. Also cutting back my VHO's by a few hours as I guess algae likes the blue spectrum, and stopping my bi-weekly water changes. Few things make me pull my hair out like algae.

Dont feel alone Jeff. I had to completely tear my frag tank apart yesterday because of a hair algae outbreak. The rack was getting loaded up so it had to all come out. Everything got a bath in vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Then gravel vacced 10 gal worth of crud out of the sand. Also pulled my dual stage reactor off the display Tank temporarily to get the water cleaned up. Took me half the day but looks much better now so hang in there. :)

Thanks Grant, no matter how good of a reefer we think we are, that dam algae can still getcha! Now back to the tank pics, I will post mine in a little while.

Jeff,I'm sure you already know this but if you have algae you have phos and/or nitrates you are more than likely getting false reading from your tests with the algae taking up the nutrients from the water column. The diatoms make me wonder about your source water or poss. Having washed old sand with tap water. Maybe check your tds on the rodi unit if good some larger and more frequent water changes until under control and a dual stage reactor with gfo and gac to get things cleaned up. Hope this helps Bud.
