Walt's Official A. thiellei Page

Yeah. Me too. She's got **** and vinegar in her veins. The last guy sold her to me 'cause she was too darn mean. I'd swear she has an in grown butt hair but she's not a mammal. So, in as much as I hate to pull her from what was likely a successful pairing with an ocellaris, I think the thiellei x thiellei pairing is a far more appealing possible outcome.

1 thiellei! 2 thiellei! 3 thiellei! 4!

On to the next stage of pairing #3 and #4. Wish me luck!

UPDATE:

So far, the pairing process has not been too terribly rough but I'm less tolerant about letting a thiellei clown get injuries than I would be a common ocellaris or clarkii as it's kind of a bigger deal to replace him if he gets an infection. Because they're in the dingy basement I simply don't want to be down there all bloody day. I'm planning to put them together for a few hours at a time until I decide it's safe... or that it's just not going to work.
There was a difference between Saturday's interactions and Sunday's interactions in that Saturday was a lot more aggressive and (what I hope will be) the male was less retaliatory on Sunday.
He was fighting back a little on Saturday. Not on Sunday. He was not doing any 45 degree twitching Saturday. He was twitching on Sunday fairly consistently. I expected this level of difficulty as this is an extremely intolerant and aggressive female. I would venture to say on the order of a marroon female. As such, I'm using a similar "role reversal" method to that that Matt P. used during the pairing of the "Lightning Marroon."

Took a leap of faith last night and left them together. I covered them over with a towel for about an hour after lights out and noted that any aggression was quelled. This morning there was no injuries detected on the male. I fed them with lights on and some of the aggression resumed. I left them covered for the day and will uncover them for a few hours each night until the aggression reaches normal pair levels. That said, the aggression is mostly posturing at this point.

Tonight's update is brought to you by the letter "P" as in patience.

After leaving the two together overnight all was well. However, after returning from work nine hours later, I found a shredded male. So, back in solitary confinement she went.

I went out to run some errands and I found the male an hour after lights out still cuddled up as close as he could get to the female. He's so desparate to be in a relationship despite this crotchity witch. So, I'm still hopeful about this pair being a possibility... no thanks to her. I'll leave them separated for a while to let him heal and see if she'll calm down a bit.

I'm really feeling like this female thinks more along the line of an orange skunk. The male is about 2/3 her size. I think this is just too much competition for her. She did well with a male ocellaris that was about 1/3 her size, which is about the size difference of a typical skunk pair. The sandaracinos before him was also about 2/3 the size and that never worked out either. It was not as violent but there was clearly no love lost between them. I'm looking for an angle around this (what I percieve as) size preference.
Enough rambling for tonight.

I've been working on this for about a month now and I officially give up. Three days this time in the same tank and no major issues but no interest either. Day three they started going at it. The smaller one was really holding his own. I think he is or will be female.
On to plan B. I need two neuter A. ocellaris that are from the Philippines.

what about waiting for the male to become a full blown male with the occy female?
with my pairs i dont have any problem swapping males cause they are true males. even with my nastiest females. my darwin females are more nasty than my 6" gsm female.

you have a male occy with the female? maybe let her beat on a few occy males.

That's what I'm saying.... I think the "male" is a little past the male stage. That I would be better served to allow it to just accept a male and become female.

That sucks. It does that rather quickly. Less than 2 weeks the male starts turning.
Your thread had me wanting a pair as well, but none to be had. Ibluewater had a pair, but they sold them. They said they weren't sure when they were getting another.

Will be following for sure. Just found this thread tonight and read the whole thing. I hope you can get the breeding to go, would def be buying a pair one day when they become more common. Good luck

iBluewater has offered some interesting specimens for sure. IMO the "pair" they were selling was a thiellei/leucokranos mixed pair. I would rather have seen him pair the leuc with the other single leuc he had or even mixed pairs of leuc with SI sandaracinos and thiellei with Philippine ocellaris.

Thanks for following. It's always nice to know others are interested in my babbling. If I have my way, they will be common and reasonably priced... but if I am successful, they will probably be offered as wholesale to a couple vendors who have been very good to me.

Start mass producing them and let the market figure out the details of selling them...

;)

Sorry to hear of your troubles with the pair...

Nick
