WantanaBei Pair (Adults)

Great pics! Love the back ground....makes my QT's look bad.

Don't want to jinx you but looks like you're home free. Those will look great in the DT.

Gorgeous, my favorite fish. I just got a female through DD. Pictures and video never do these fish justice. Good Luck

They are beautiful fish but the males are mean SOBs, just had to save a coral beauty from certain death last night because the male is such a pain. Female didn't bother a thing, put the male in and watch out

I also have a pair of watanabei and a coral beauty but they are in an 180. The CB went in first. They don't bother each other. Must be just a personality type of thing.

OP any updates?

I'm picking up two 2" females Monday. I have a 4" female already. Fingers crossed, there will be some gender swapping in the future:lol2:

Beautiful pair. I had a male about the same size. The lfs that sold it to me never mentioned that it would turn to a female without a mate. Started to notice the change within a couple of weeks, did some research here on rc, and found out. Asked some lfs to find me a female which took almost 2 months but by then the change was just about complete. Good luck with your pair.

I can tell you that we had to catch the female and separate her from him. He was beating the crap out of her, but also doing the mating shake as I will call it. May try and reintroduce her down the road

My male is the exact opposite. He's the shyest fish in the tank. He hid in the rockwork for 5 days with only his eyeball showing. Now for the past week he is hanging out behind the rockwork and shyly swimming around a bit.

None of the other fish are looking at him or bothering him, he's just painfully shy. He is the largest fish in the tank or a close second to the female swallowtail.

His female watanabie that he was in qt with for 3 months is out swimming with all the other fish in the tank. Poor guy!

I'll update if his personality changes.

Got a male from QM, ate after introduced & was gone in less then 48 hrs.
The only looks he got was from the female.
Maybe she scared him to death?

They can go female to male, male to female. I have never had luck longer term trying to pair them. Good luck!

My female is doing so well I've decided to leae well enough alone and keep her by herself.

One question. I know these fish commonly have swim bladder issues. She comes to the surface and looks like she is taking something off the surface of the water but then "burps" air bubbles for a minute or two. She eats like a pig and is the boss of the tank. Is this swim bladder related and will it be a threat to her?

This is a Fail also. To the swim bladder question, I don't believe that is what you need to worry about with that behavior. I have another fellow reefer has a hippo tang that does that, my foxface does that daily too. Swim bladder issues resemble swimming upside down and in corkscrews. Typically if a fish is going to get it, it will be soon after introduction to the QT. I had a perfectly healthy Lamarki develop swim bladder issues within 4 days of QT

Whenever I have seen this problem it has always evidenced itself very quickly. Perhaps improper decompression when collected?

I've had it happen on fish more lately after shipping, especially angels. One out of DD, should have been plenty of time to recover from collection I would think.

The only fish I have personally had with swim bladder issues have been angels. You would think that swim bladder issues would show up and kill the fish long before anyone has a opportunity to purchase them. I have read about a method used on deep water angels with swim bladder issues involving a container and then the use of a second deeper container to try and mimic the pressure of where they were collected to reverse the bladder issue. I haven't ever attempted this myself but if I ever have another angel with swim bladder problems I will give it a try

I agree. However, if they were shipped in a non-pressurized plane . . . ?????
