Water Temperature

My LFS gave me a shock today by telling me that she keeps her tank temperatures between 74-76 F! It seems from all that I've read, ideal temps should be kept around 79-80ish???

So now I'm wondering where you guys try to keep your tank temperatures?

ThanX!

I keep mine at 82 only because of my clownfish breeding but 78-80 is a good average. There is nothing wrong with 74-76 but that would be the lowest i would go on a reef tank

I let mine fall to 75 in the winter and I know several very successful reefers who let their mixed reef tanks drop to 74 in the winter including two "tank of the month" recipients. My clown fish usually do not lay eggs when the temperature drops below 77, but last month they laid a clutch when the water was at 75.8. My SPS dominated corals do not show any preference to higher or lower temperatures. I keep the tank below 82 in the summer.

My tank ranges from a high of 82 in the summer to 75 in the winter. Many of the worlds reefs range from the mid 70s in the winter to the mid 80's in the summer months. I try to limit the high temp in my tank to 82 through the use of fans in the summer. I used to run a chiller to keep my tank at 78 but that was a waste of electricity in my opinion. Granted, I have a large volume and because of that, my temp changes are very slow. I've had no issues with my fish or corals at either end of the scale.

Don't sweat slow temp variances.
Rapid changes are what you want to avoid.
Over the last 2+ years, my tanks have seen a low of 77 and a high of 84. But mostly, 79-80.
The corals weren't happy at 84 ( 120 outside! ), and I lost a plate coral.
Otherwise everyone seems fine.

When I was in Jamaica this year, I tested the water on the reefs at 83 and 84 degrees on most days, one day it was 85!

I used to be concerned when my tank got to 80, now I keep it at 80 all the time.

Colder water holds more oxygen. My one tank that I have no heater is actually in the low 70s right now and crystal clear. The other tank is 82 and usually a bit murky. I have been slowly lowering the temps to get it to 77.
