Wave2k's are here!

Does anyone have a comparison of the Wave2k compared to the Reeftec Power surge.

I don't think anybody has both yet, but I would venture a guess that they offer a completely different type of water motion. While the wave2k gives short bursts of whatever gallonage compacity every few seconds (giving the appearance of a lot of flow due to the up and down rocking) the reeftec is going to offer a sustained, penetrating unidirectional flow.

I think its going to be hard to compare any product to the Wave2k. There's nothing else quite like it on the market. I would expect that you would need more than just the Wave2k in anything other than a softie tank. A combination of the two would probably be incredible.

I have a Wave2k corner unit. No problems to report as of yet. I'm very happy with this product so far. Andy if you want any specific questions answered, feel free to private message me.

Last night I came home and found a box by the door. Woohooo, its here! It was packaged very well and I set it up on my dry 170-gallon tank.

I believe that mine was a custom-built unit because I requested that it have no slots on the two short sides. I just have to call Jody with some questions about the motor mounting bracket.

Can someone say if they still like it or not. Does it really move the water? So far there haven't been a whole lot of reports as to how good it is. Would you buy it again? Are your corals opening up?

Jason

Hi JasonD,

IMO these units are the best solution to water movement save for a RCSD device. The center units move 4000GPH, the corner units move 2000GPH. I would buy it again for another tank, absolutely. Feel free to private message me if you have any other questions.

I still have mine in the box because I have lots of plumbing to do on the new tank. I should have it up and running by the end of the month, so I'll update then. By the way I am going to run both the Wave2K and 2 of the Reeftecs on my 450.

Does anyone have a pic of the top of their unit. I just got my corner unit and Im not quite sure on how this all connects together.

Hi cruehead,

Here's some pics that should help you. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

Wow..this is cool. Thanks sedgro for sharing your experience and thank you Ernie for making that vid available!

I called and spoke to Jody few minutes ago and he sounded like a very nice guy to deal with! Sometime next week I will go to Wae2k warehouse and see it in action. I am very enthusiastic about getting the center unit.

I have been thinking of getting two seaswirl, but not rethinking that. I don't think I can afford both, but might just add a center unit along with few other lockline to provide direct flow...

Looking at the video, I got real confused... was I looking at a real coral reef or segro's tank? Great tank btw.

Please share some more info.. Thanks...

I got 2 of the center units for my 180 - I have been running 2 sen900 sump return pumps and 4 gemini powerheads on a wavemaker, but I was still looking for a little more. I have had them running for a couple weeks now, and overall I like them because of the added randomness/disontinuity in the circulation patterns. But I also would like more out of them. I emailed and asked about the ability to simply reduce the diameter of the main rotation shaft pulley wheel to increase the oscillation period, and the vendor indicated that it might be a bit too much for the standard motor and cause it to wear out prematurely. If I decide to modify this thing, I'll report back.

Frisco, that's exactly what I was thinking when considering their relatively short cycle. It would be hard to get much push/momentum/direction out of them. Not to say they aren't beneficial, but I would think they would need to be supplemented at least by a very strong return line or something more for a larger sps tank.

tentacle,
Great pictures! When I installed my motor bracket, I noticed that the three screws that attach to the in-tank wave unit do not hold the bracket rigidly. The back end of the bracket can wiggle around a bit. I need to relocate the wave unot so that the cylindrical standoffs for the screws are secure against both the wave unit and the bottom of the bracket when the screws are tightened. Does this make sense?

I also noticed that the motor does not mount flush to the bottom of the bracket because the housing around the shaft has a larger diameter than the width of the slot in the bracket. I can widen the slot a bit to get a better fit between the motor and the bracket.

Crue, your welcome. Thanks gas. Gas did you use the suction cups? If the unit is cupped to the wall with the 4 threaded suction cups, and attached securely to the bracket with the 3 nylon screws, it should not be moving around. I just tried to move mine and it didn't budge. Check it out, although if there is a little play happening, it won't affect performance and I doubt it's something to worry about. Widening the slot on the bracket would be good if it is in fact small. That or ask Jody to send you out a new bracket. He sent me 2 brackets free of charge (1 for the left, 1 for the right) that were a lot longer then the normal versions, as I have a 1/2" acrylic tank, and I wanted a bit more breathing room for the motor. Let me know how it works out.

How long do you think the suction cups will hold up??? Ive never had any luck with any others.
